I contacted Global Yacht Hauling, Inc. via their web site in early September 2008 to get an estimate for transporting a sailboat from Seattle, WA to New Jersey. I was considering making an offer on the boat, but the amount of the offer I could afford depended on the cost to transport it to the East coast. Ed Perrin called me personally shortly after and proceeded to give me tips on hiring a transporter, even if I chose someone other than him. He was extremely friendly on the phone, and appeared to be quite knowledgeable about yacht hauling.

Ed called me several times during the fall to see how I was making out with the boat. He seemed genuinely interested in me and my ability to purchase the boat. He called me at least 4 times. It should be noted that no other transporter I contacted via the internet bothered to make a personal contact! Ed Perrin had gained my trust; I told him send the quote and contract and I would look it over.

On November 14, 2008 I was emailed the contract. (It should be noted that the FMCSA/USDOT had involuntarily revoked Global Yacht Hauling, Inc. license on November 12!  It called for 50% of the $15,000 price quote as a deposit, 25% when boat was loaded and 25% when boat was delivered. I hesitated to send it right back because that seemed like a lot to put down for a deposit.

Finally Ed Perrin called and put the pressure on me. He said if I didn't contract to haul the boat soon, I wouldn't be able to get it done as he was going to be so busy he couldn't do it for the price he originally quoted. He said other transporters would be busy moving boats after the New Year as new boat production would be taking priority for most transporters and it would be tough to get my boat to the East coast. I was still hesitant because of the large deposit, but he assured me that this was standard in the industry because permits had to be secured and routers had to be paid to calculate the best route for the load. He spent over 45 minutes on the phone with me and was very convincing.

On November 21 I sent Global Yacht Hauling, Inc. a bank check for $7,500 as deposit via USPS Priority Mail, and asked for confirmation. On, or about, November 28 Ed Perrin called to let me know he received it. As the contract stated that transport would be placed on the schedule when deposit was received, I asked what the date would be--Ed said he would get back to me. He never did; the next time I talked to him was when I called him on December 8. He still didn't give me a firm date, just that it would be after January 1. I called back later in the day and left a message for him on the answering machine that I still had a few more questions.

I never received a return call, and I started to get suspicious that maybe he wasn't legitimate. I started poking around the internet to find out some more about Global Yacht Hauling, Inc. and Ed Perrin. I also had some problems that might delay the purchase of my boat, so I called Ed Perrin on his cell phone and told him I wouldn't be able to use him. I also told him that according to the US Department of Transportation/  his license was revoked. This, by the way, would make my contract with him void, because he wasn't licensed to contract with me when he sent me the contract!

He told me that I was wrong, his license was valid. I told him I still could not use him to haul the boat and asked how to end the contract and get my money back. Ed Perrin stated he would refund all my money when he got home for Christmas. I haven't heard from him yet.

Here is the transcript of our conversation on December 15, 2008:

Me: Well, it's, I would like to end this if I could. What is it going to cost me, here?
Ed: What was that?
Me: I said I would like to end this, what is it going to cost me, here?
Ed: It ain't gonna cost you nothin'-if you don't want us to haul your boat we won't haul your boat. I got a lot of boats to haul.
Me: Okay, well I would rather not but I understand you took some time and some effort to spend with me, uh, how much of my money are you going to be able to refund?
Ed: I'll refund it all, when I get home. I mean I,  I'm running right now on 75 with a big boat on and I'm going home for Christmas.

I sent him a letter via United States Postal Service Priority Mail/Signature Confirmation. Though it was signed for on December 29 by R Perrin, I haven't heard anything from Global Yacht Hauling, Inc. or Ed Perrin as of September 13, 2009.
