So I went to the yahoo.com advertised link to freecreditreport.com back in March and signed up to see my credit report once. I've read other reports and I've heard of being able to select a button that says you want to receive 1 report rather than three (which you have to pay for?) and also some very fine print buried somewhere that says that when you view your free credit report, you also are signing up for, basically, $12 to be taken out of your checking account every month -- for no reason. Soon after I tried to call the company when I saw the "irving california" thing on my checking account statement. Obviously like everyone else the phone number listed didn't work or reach anyone. It was TOTALLY bogus! I believe that in late April or early May (it's so long ago) I got ahold of someone and asked them to close the account. Well soon after I stopped using that bank account but unfortunately for me, didn't close it completely. The money kept being taken out of my account every month, causing my credit line to go into debt to pay off this 12$/month charge, and with a little 4 m/o baby I am honest enough to admit that after we switched banks I was so busy and totally forgot about the fiasco. Well I looked on my account again to make sure it was all right to close completely and saw the charges being taken out and found a number, I believe off of this web site, which actually got ahold of someone. I told her I wanted to cancel my "account" and she kept saying "no, that will be an option, but wait, if you keep your account I am authorized to give you a $24 gift card," and "no, wait, yous hould wait to cancel until your monthly membership is up so that you can have the benefits of membership for another 2 weeks." I had to literally interrupt her and forcefully demand that she close my account right then and there. She said she did and I hung up. I got an email confirmation of the cancellation right away, and the next day I got my VERY FIRST e-mail in 7 months informing me of "no new activity to my credit report".

I am reporting this to my bank and closing my account as soon as they put two months' worth of charges back in my account (bank rules).
What a scam!!!

Fee is explained.

AUTHOR: Kim - New Jersey (U.S.A.)

You, ma'am, did not read what you where signing up for. If you give out your credit or bank account information, it would be best to know WHY you are giving it out. Read everything, even the fine print so you know what you are getting yourself into.

This website is affilated with Experian, one of the credit bueras. You can get 1 free report per year, but if you use this site to check the other bueras out, you will have to pay for them. There are other ways to get those reports free, but its not from this site. This is a free Experian report.

The Triple Advantage charge is for a really good service. For the $12.95 a month, you have unlimited access to your Experian credit report. You can run your report and get an updated score everyday if you want. You will be alerted anytime somone makes an iquiry on your credit, and you can keep an eye on what is being reported on your credit report with experian. Now, this service may not be of substance to everyone, but for someone trying to clean up mistakes, its a great tool.

Also, you can choose to cancel Triple Advantage directly from the website.

Consumer naivete is not a license to scam!

AUTHOR: Tim - Valparaiso (U.S.A.)

Kim, you are correct, but your statement only goes to the naievite of the consumer.

But the consumer's naivite wouldn't be so costly if she was dealing with honest companies.

Soon after the federal "one free per year" law was enacted, and after it had received considerable publicity, we began hearing commercials for "freecreditreport.com."

At first, even I assumed that this was the site where you would get your government mandated free credit reports. It was the first place I went when I was trying to get my own free reports.

Fortunately, I was smart enough to realize that the government's program would not be asking me for a credit card number and would not try to sell me on other programs. After a couple more searches, I found "annualcreditreport," the actual "free credit report" site.

It seems fairly clear to me that your company's advertising is specifically designed to divert consumers away from the REAL free credit report site and to your FAKE free credit report site.

Beyond that, you guys stretch the meaning of the word "free" to its limits. Something that is only "free" when it is given in conjunction with a $150/year service (which is fairly worthless) isn't actually "free," is it?

Now, putting all of that aside, your rebuttal COMPLETELY failed to adress the biggest issues presented by the reporter. Not only was she unwittingly duped into your service but, when she tried to cancel it, your customer service was either non-existent, pushy, or inept!

You can only blame the consumer up to a point. Are some people less than savvy when it comes to modern commerce? Sure. Does that give you a license to scam them? Nope.
