The facts are as follow:

On Friday, March 13, 2009, I received a voicemail from an individual who said she had a "life or death" situation with a kitten. I phoned the individual, who identified herself as a breeder. She had bred a Bengal cat to a Serval cat and had only one kitten survive. The kitten, she said, weighed three ounces. She was calling because the kitten was urinating from his abdomen. I asked where she was calling from and she stated that she was near the Ohio-West Virginia border. I practice in Chicago. I asked her why she did not contact any veterinarians near her and she responded that she "didn't trust" any of the local doctors. We discussed the possibility of a congenital defect (patent urachus), but I stated that I was unable to diagnose this kitten because we were hundreds of miles away. We also discussed the problems inherent in singleton kittens. I recommended that she try to contact The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. I also recommended that the kitten be seen by a veterinarian, but the caller did not want to remove the kitten from the home. At no time did I suggest that the kitten was worth saving.

Subsequent to our phone conversation, this individual posted a highly negative review of me on www.yelp.com She then followed-up with a second review in which she impugned my truthfulness and accused me of writing positive reviews for myself and/or having my staff write the reviews. I have neither written reviews of myself nor do I have hired staff. Yelp.com has subsequently removed the second review, as it violates their standards. Due to First Amendment citations, Yelp.com has allowed the first review to stand. However, it is in glaring opposition to the other reviews written by clients.

The irony is that prior to taking the phone call, I had just assisted in performing an exceptionally complicated surgery on another cat pro bono (free). For some unknown reason, this poster has taken it as a mission to impugn my care and conscientiousness.

I will ask this question : If it was truly a life or death situation, why call a veterinarian who is unknown to you and lives hundreds of miles away?

Michele Gaspar, DVM, DABVP (Feline)

My cat, Jake, has been a patient of Dr. Michele Gaspar's for the last year and a half. She SAVED his life. The person posting the information about Dr. Gaspar being a bad vet has repeatedly and obsessively posted the same information on many websites. The information she states that Dr. Gaspar has written her own reviews is inaccurate. I can state this because I have written a review for Dr. Gaspar. Dr. Gaspar was the third vet I went to based on a recommendation from ANOTHER vet to treat my cat's special needs. Dr. Gaspar is an amazing person and a wonderful, caring vet. I don't know the circumstances that the person posting the negative reviews has faced but it appears to me that they are a very angry individual and should not take it out on such an amazing person as Dr. Michele Gaspar.

Dr Gaspar has been treating my cat since January. He was a very sick cat whose previous vet was unable to diagnose. I was referred to Dr Gaspar and withing one visit my cat was on the way to good health. She worked with his diet, took away inappropriate medicines and put him on the proper ones. And she treated my anxiety with patience and kindness. I have known other good veterinarians but none as competent and kind as Michele.

Michelle Gaspar took care of my 2 cats in Flossmoor. She was very caring and even went to bat with the humane society to get me a refund when she had to repeat a hysterectomy for my cat that their surgeon had done (she went into heat so we know the surgery was incomplete). She took amazing care of both my cats and always gave us time for questions. She took care of an abandoned cat that had a frozen jaw and nursed i t back to health.. My sadness is that she is no longer out South for my 3rd cat. None of the quotes attributed to Michelle by the complainant sound anything like Michelle.

Dr. Gaspar has cared for one of my dogs, when she was working at Roscoe Village Animal Hospital. Not only was she the most thorough vet I've ever taken my dog to, but she was also extremely funny & caring. I think it's a shame that someone thought it necessary to try to tarnish her reputation and post slanderous things all over the internet. If we still lived in Chicago we would definitely be taking all 3 of our pets to Dr. Gaspar, I trust her immensely. 

I read this consumer's review, and I totally disagree. Dr. Gaspar spent two hours with my animals talking about preventive care for them. One cat has some special needs with regard to bladder stones, and Dr. Gaspar was very thorough and thoughtful in her approach to his situation.

I'm so glad I chose to see her in spite of this person's review. Dr. Gaspar is just lovely, and I recommend her whole-heartedly.
