So I've read the majority of these posts and they actually encouraged me to post myself. To make it short and sweet I've had it with the unwarranted late fees and "unreturned" movie fees. I even stopped renting from Blockbuster for a little over a year because of it, but decided to give them another chance a couple of months ago. Obviously since I'm posting here that was a big mistake.
When I walked into my Blockbuster to inquire about the movie I supposedly didn't return I was NOT greeted by any of the employees. I know they might have been a little busy what with the time being 11AM in the morning and the store completely devoid of ANY other customers. I walked up to the employee by the register where I waited patiently for about 3-4 minutes for him to finish his personal conversation over the store telephone. Once he was done he casually asked me if he could help me. I politely said, "Yeah, I'm wondering what movie I'm being charged for because I guess you guys didn't get the movie back?" He typed my name into the computer and mentioned the name of the movie AS HE WAS WALKING AWAY FROM THE REGISTER. I guess he thought I was gonna make a big fuss about it. So I just left. Oh, and it's not like I strolled into the store in basketball shorts and a t-shirt. I was dressed in a business suit and took time from my day to investigate why I was being charged. I'm just appalled at the lackadaisical service I received despite the fact I WAITED ON THE BLOCKBUSTER EMPLOYEE.
And I understand that it's not all Blockbuster employees that are as terrible as the ones I've dealt with at my location. But for some reason my Blockbuster seems to hire the most incompetent people because every single year I have to deal with at least 2-3 instances just like this one...and I don't even go to Blockbuster for 30% of my movie rentals.
Anyways, thank goodness for Hollywood Video. Now they seem to hire true movie-loving employees who actually care (or pretend to at least) about the customer service. Even if they were to be stealing candy, movies, etc, at least they take care of the customers.

There are no late fees

AUTHOR: Nuggets - Stroudsburg (U.S.A.)

They're restocking fees.

If a movie is rented and we'll use a 2 day rental for this instance...you have 7 extra days. That's a total of 9 days you get to keep a movie and it wont even be charged immediately...you have an extra 2 days for leeway. If a movie is returned after those days it gets charged to the credit card on file and you're given 30 days to return the movie. Now, say you kept a 2 day rental out for a total of 21 days...take away 2 days, that's 19 days...now divide by 2, that's 18.5. multiply 18 with 5$ and you get 100$ that you would get charged in late fees.

With a restocking fee, you just return the movie within 30 days of the charge being made and you just saved yourself 98.75$ with the 1.25$ restocking fee.

What you also saw, the "personal" conversation, I think you need to clarify what you heard. Sometimes, an employee (perhaps full time), has to be nice over the phone to other stores...why be rude and everything, why not a "hello" or anything?

Your manner of how you're dressed will also not matter. If you just stand there...staring, I can understand why no one said anything. That's when you speak up and say, "excuse me sir," and usually, they should look up. I know I do this, only because...I'm human. We go through this for hours in a day while working. Or you could be the guy I had to help who just tapped his ring at me...would you like to be treated like that?

Lastly, this isn't really a "rip-off" but more of a bad happening within the specified location. Not all BBV stores are like this and not all employees act like that. Perhaps he was just apathetic to greeting people because most people who enter the Blockbuster walk by, don't acknowledge the employees and keep walking...we're sick of being walked on, to be honest.
