We retned 4 movies and went to the counter where we were told that Blockbuster now has a new pricing policy. We were told that rentals would now cost $2.50 for a single day, and $5.00 for a full 5 days. Since the date was May 24th, we only wanted to rent the movies for a day or two at most. The manager told us that we could rent them for a week, but if we returned them by the following day, we'd only be charged for a single day.

Well, when I returned the movies on the 25th, the following day after renting them, I asked whether we would receive cash back or be given credits to rent additional movies. The manager told me, rather tersely, that we had the choice to select either one day rental or 5 day rental, and we picked the 5 day rental so no reimbersement would be forthcoming. I told him that he led me to believe that there would be compensation if we returned the movies by the following day. He insisted, rather unpleasantly, that he never said anything of the sort.

I left upset and unhappy, but since my wife was with me at the time I rented the movies, I asked her to confirm what the manager originally said. She said her understanding was precisely the same as mine. That he said we'd pay only $2.50 if we returned the movies the following day, which we did!

This manager is lying through his teeth. And for all the employee rebuttals I've seen on these complaints, I know what I heard, and my wife does too. Neither of us have a reputation for lying. My wife works in law enforcement, so she is particularly keen on telling things straight.

Either we are lying or the manager of the store is lying. So who would have anything to gain from such lying? Why, the store manager of course. By selling us a week instead of a day, he runs up the profitability of his store. A serious concern, one might note, in the face of store closures around the nation! Besides that, he keeps the difference between $2.50 per movie and the $5.00 we paid. That's a cool 10 bucks extra for nothing, and he's got the movies to rent out to some other sucker.

These guys are nothing short of snake oil salesmen. They shuck and jive. And you get skinned at checkout. The difference between these guys and car rental agreements is that car rental agencies tend to be reputable, so I don't need that comparison either. Car rental agencies make extremely clear what their terms are. They must. Truth in lending laws apply. But not so to Blockbuster Video.

My recommendation to anybody reading this is to boycott Blockbuster Video until they develop a sense of ethical behavior. But don't hold your breath while waiting!

ah hah

AUTHOR: Nuggets - Stroudsburg (U.S.A.)

so you say you've read other employee rebuttals...so then you should know, not all stores are the same.

For instance...my store doesn't have that rental policy. So, I don't even get the chance to do what that store did. So boycott my store?
Second, I DON'T lie to customers leading them to believe they'll get anything for doing something. Boycott me?

If you want to boycott, boycott that specific store. You know there are people working in that store who do have bills to pay, clothes to buy, families to feed...just like you. There are some people working in the company that suck and need to be fired...but I for one, am not one of those people. So still, boycott me? Nay. There are other forms of the company you can use instead of that store.

Now, I went to the site and I typed in a zip code of your state and just looked. I see a few locations within 5 miles of each other.

Go there, find another store. If it's a mile longer to go there, or 5, try it and see if they're better people in there. Otherwise...then yeah, don't deal. But why tell others? Not like it's going to help much.

Ex-employee

AUTHOR: Kma - Auburn (U.S.A.)

I too have had several problems with Blockbuster (one being in the title of course) though not exactly the same. My problem was with their "no late fees" which doesn't tell you that if you have it too long, they'll force you to buy the movie and don't tell you about it until after they've already charge you (in which case they send you a letter to tell you that if you don't bring it back right then they'll charge you, but if you take it in that day and give it to them, they'll call you a week later to tell you to pick up the movie that you've bought from them) and "too long" is not that long.

Don't work for them though, most likely you will get a manager who's never there and a fellow employee who got a friend who needs a job. In which case they will get their friend to come in and apply ON THE DAY YOU'RE AT WORK! and then go tell the manager you threw a phone book at someone (yeah, really happened) when they threw it. And then they'll try to hold your last check and claim they gave it to you.

Maybe I have too much dislike for this company and their employees...

Ex-Store Manager Advice

AUTHOR: Patrick - Mesa (U.S.A.)

As an ex-Store Manager for Blockbuster here in Arizona, the best advice I can give you at this point is to contact the Regional or District Manager. If you go back into the store, their name and number should be listed up on the marquee. If not, ask someone for it.

Call them and calmly explain your side of the story. The least they can do is give you two free one-day rentals (which is the equivalent of what you would have saved in the first place).

For a while after I ended my employment I used the in-store unlimited rentals deal, then the online deal. But now I have stopped going there altogether. I now use Redbox for rentals. It's only $1 per day, and I actually spend less there than with the unlimited plans I had with BB.
