Examiner.com asks writers to join and contribute. They require you to waste your time filling out an application. But, they don't tell you in their "application" that they require a social security number. They send you an email expecting you to email your SSN. Nasty.

They say that they will do a background check on contributors. No idea why. No one else on the web does this. Even print magazines pay by check to the name on the article. I have to wonder why Examiner.com is so hot to get writers' social security numbers.

And, criminal records are public information. Checks can be done without the SSN. I did not give my SSN and will not contribute to their site.

Once they have your SSN, they can do whatever they want. They claim that they won't investigate your credit but who knows.

After I complained, they claimed that they needed the SSN because they were "employing" writers. Examiner.com claims to pay $10/1000 visits to the articles you write. However, I don't know anyone who has been paid. Google pays better than that and they don't require anything. Same with Paypal transactions.

All in all, IMHO, I'd stay far away from Examiner.com

BTW, their "news" is written by people who are not necessarily journalists.

#1 Employee

Examiner.com is an employer of journalists

AUTHOR: M morgan - Alexander City (U.S.A.)

Report # 421968
written by Lori in Canton, Georgia is full of misleading
information about Examiner.com. If you go to work for a company, we’ll say
McDonald’s for instance, you are required by federal law (via IRS) to complete
a W-9 tax form. Examiner.com who hires journalists to write for their websites,
requires that all employees file a W-9. Yes, as every one is aware you have to
include your social security number, but that is at every job, even if you work
for McDonald’s. The same with the criminal background check. You cannot do a
proper criminal background check without the employee’s social security number.
The purpose for the background check is to assure Examiner.com that you are not
a cyber criminal and/or a registered sex offender. The reason for that is that
the journalists that work for Examiner.com have a BIO page with contact
information. They do not wish to hire individuals who will cyber stalk or harass
their journalists or their fans. Yes, the contributors for Examiner are, in fact, journalists.
You must apply for the position and supply writing credentials along with a
demonstration of your writing abilities to be considered for employment.

Please note
that within the report on your website, your contributor mentioned Google. What
she is talking about is called Ad Sense. In order to participate in their
program you must pay them upfront and continue to pay them every month in order
to ‘work for them.’ In addition you must also advertise your own material.

Examiner.com
does not charge you any fees, because they are hiring you to do a job. You tell
me who is getting ripped off, a journalist working for an actual company or
someone who has to constantly pay Google in order to continue in a program that
may never pay.
