I have a Belk credit card that I pay online. I have never had a balance over $400 at any one time. Every month I pay more than the payment due and my balance doesn't seem to be decreasing. Here's why. The payment is due in the 23rd of each month. I pay it on the last working day of the previous month when I get paid. I called Belk and the lady that I talked to was rude and said that I can't pay early like that, I have to pay within the billing cycle. I told her that I am paying more than is due each month and early and I want those charges reversed. She said, "I will see about reversing one month but I am not going to argue with you, sir." So, you pay late fees if you pay your Belk charge card too early. How convenient a rip-off is this one? I am curious to see if anyone else has had this experience. I had previously filed a report with the Better Business Bureau. They have until August 1 to answer it.

This is the way credit card work

What you are complaining about is the way revolving credit on credit cards work. All the money you pay on an account meets the minimum payment due plus reduces any principle balance by the excess paid.
If your payment is due on the 23rd of each month, it probably means that the billing cycle begins on or near the 3rd of each month. By making payments at the end of each month you are effectively paying late, and the excess payment only offsets any late fees. Any excess payment above the interest and late fees reduces your principle owed.
Unfortunately with revolving credit you cannot pay in advance such that it is credited to the next month's bill. You can only reduce the amount owed for the next billing cycle.
You need to find out the date the billing cycle begins, and make your payments the following day. That way you avoid late fees and reduce your principle payments more quickly.
You intentions are clear and commendable. I understand what you are trying to do. You just need to understand how revolving credit works.

Your wrong

You do not understand how credit cards work. Credit cards are considered an "open account". As such they have a specific billing period. By law they MUST apply any payment on the day it was received. They can not "assume" that you actually meant to pay it for the next month.
If your bill is due on the 23rd, the billing period it is for probably "closes" around the 1st or 2nd of each month. So if you are paying it on the "last working day of the previous month" it is being applied to the previous billing periods statement.
If you received a late payment fee it is your fault. Because your payment was done in the previous billing period, the statement would show the payment applied to the previous month and still show a minimum due for the current month.
Believe it or not this is a real easy fix, just pay your bill a few days later. If you pay on-line just schedule it for a later date. But if this is still a huge issue for you then ask them to change your due date to one earlier in the month.
Oh and this is the same way that any credit card would work.
