I called CarMax to ask about them buying my car. After several phone calls , I determined that they would pay between 5500 to 6500 for the vehicle and would be available all day Friday, Jan. 18. I drove the car, followed by my wife in her car the 3.5 hours to the dealership.
Once there, the shysters offered thousands less, saying they thought the car had steel rather than alloy wheels. Clearly they thought, they could just steal the car as I would not want to drive it the 3.5 hours back.
I did not sell the vehicle to them and would caution others not to trust this group. They lied to me, plain and simple.

no one lied to you... what they did do is violate company policy by making an offer without first inspecting the vehical witch you probably got those figures from blue book anyway. miles, age, interior, exterior, frame, tires, mechanical conditions and market value all play a role in the value of your car. if your driving a car with high miles no one likes and is known to be a hunk of crap it's an auful color and it's got bald tires.... you'll be lucky to get 500 bucks for it. so dont complain when a dealership doesn't give you the offer of a lifetime, just take your business elsewhere

This is an old post but I agree with Carmax people on one point and that is they will NEVER appraise a car over the phone or even provide an estimated value. Valuing cars is very subjective and considering the market these days there are alot of factors that determine value. I dont understand the alloy vs steel wheel and it was said after a number of calls you ascertained a range in value but you dont say those calls were to Carmax.
In any event, KBB is a joke! Noone uses that anymore and CarMaxl only use that to show a difference if its BELOW but funny how that KBB cost is NEVER on there when the car is "unique" and then it is never shown. I tell people to use the Black Book. Thats closer to wholesale value and more along the lines what Carmax and other retailers are payin for cars...ultimately its the auction that drives the prices for the cars these days and what Carmax uses to price its vehicles.

Anyone at carmax, even the ones who specialized as buyers, can not, or at least are not supposed to, give you an offer without seeing the car. Report him/her to carmax HQs.

For starters, alloy wheels are more valuable then steel wheels, but not that much more expensive.
Also, we NEVER EVER appraise vehicles over the phone. We always say that you must bring it in for us to appraise it.
We often tell people to look up KBB.com for a rough estimate, but nothing more then that.
And finally, the appraisal is a completely free service, completely free of charge, so why is there such an issue?
