Someone from City Cheverolet called me and my husband several times and told us we were preappoved for a car with no down payment and they had 5 Altimas in stock right then if we could come up and look, all we had to do was sign the papers and take it home.
We drove 2 hrs to get there and then they told us they had not had any Altimas in over 6 months and also they required 1,000 downpayment on any vehicle.
Then to top it off they asked if they could take a look at our trade in, My husband gave him the key to go take a look and the next thing we know our truck is gone and he is refusing to give us our keys or tell us where he moved our truck, so he could make a sale.
I was very disappointed in the service we recieved and will not ever go back again.
An unhappy customer

Try these ideas!

There's a couple of easy ways to defend against this sleazy tactic:
--you can always raise a ruckus with the salesman until he returns your keys. Loud voices attract attention. OR
--drive over there with a duplicate key (preferably one you don't care if you lose) and have another key on your person. If they won't return your key, simply walk out and drive away. That will stun them. Make sure the key you're willing to lose doesn't have a computer chip in it like some of the late model year cars do. Those are REALLY expensive. This tactic won't work if that's the kind of key you have. OR
--if you have a cell phone, promptly announce to the salesman that s/he has 10 minutes to produce the key or you will call the police. Then call the police. Claim your key is "stolen" property.
Don't let these sleazeballs control you. That's what they like to do. It's easy to turn the tables on them, so DO IT.

Just wanted to let you know that you're not the only one who had the key thing happen to them. My husband purchases a new truck every two years. We go to different dealerships until we find the best deal. We purchased a vehicle this year and our first stop was City Chevrolet. I had my mom keep my infant twin boys while we shopped. After an hour or so at City Chevrolet, I was tired and ready to go. My mom had called because the babies were getting fussy and wanted us to come home. We told the saleman we were ready to leave, but he didn't want to give our truck keys back. He kept wanting to talk about the deal and he'd have to locate the keys. It only took one statement from my husband telling him to get the keys or he'll knock his face off. We left there and didn't return to purchase the vehicle. Instead we purchased from Smiclas Chevrolet on NW Expressway and May. In a couple of years, we will be on the market for another new truck, but I can tell you that we won't even give City Chevrolet a chance for our business.
