I was a happy Compass Bank customer for serveral years until recently. I have since got online to Rip Off Reports to do my own research. WOW, was I surprised! I thought that my living Compass nighmare was just me and that I had done something wrong. However, I am very pleased to see that I am not alone in my findings.
Let me start off by saying, prior to 2005, I was happily banking at another very large bank. But my job changed and I needed to travel all week, and only be home on the weekends. The ATM fees at little america banks were killing me. So, I made the switch to Compass for their free ATM offers. Everything seemed fine. I knew and understood their deposit and credits information, and never seemed to have a problem. Until one day things changed. I think like everyone else in the world, the economy is killing people. Maybe that is why banks are taking such a hit on people. I just think that Compass abuses their power, and authority.
It was pay day, and like most people, the days leading to payday are never easy. I got up, checked my balance and saw that my direct deposit was there (8am), no pending debits. I proceeded to get ready, and do my thing. I left for work, now 9am. Stopped to feed the pig called a car ($1 debit charge), and then stopped for my morning Joe. Mind you, it's 9:30am now, and my check is there and ready to go. I had $7 in my account to start the day without my two purchases. All is good and happy in the world.
The next day, I do my normal thing, bank......... I had 3 NSF fees pending. So, I called the bank. What's up with this. Got the normal, should've balanced your checkbook deal. I did. My balance yesterday was $7 not including dd of 1700, no other transactions posted that day (today's balance was 1707 before NSF fees). So, what did I do wrong? I bought coffee, gas, and lunch. But none of these have posted, and my check was there before the debits were made. Does not matter. OK, what can you do, but bend over and let them do what they want. You are their hostage.
Next payday, they waited 3 days to post dd. Why? In 3 years they never held a dd. Then it dawned on me. I'm paid on the 15th, and I have a auto debit scheduled for the 17th. Funny, this month, they held my deposit 3 days so that my auto debit would cause a NSF fee. WOW! So, I went to the branch to find out WTF. Of course no help. I called 800#, they were baffled, and the kicker was all my bills were scheduled to be paid that week. Much to my surprise, the rep that I spoke to at the bank, put a freeze on my acccount. How? Why? I don't know. Still don't know, and it's been a week.
Then I start to read these posts and responses. And all I can think to myself is WTF? How can a bank do crap like this to all these people. And these are just the people who will speak up. Who is this Chole person? Does she get paid good money to sit back and make comments on each and every post? Does she find it interesting? I find it interesting that at times she's claims to be an Ex-Employee, and others a comsumer, and on some posts seems to have private and privillaged information about people and circumstance. That were never in a post. So, where is she getting her information from if she's an Ex-Employee or a Consumer?
I think rip-off-report is a great thing, I also think that these people who are employees who sit back and try to make comments about things they know nothing about are idiots. Say you are an employee. Don't claim to be a consumer or former employee. Give me a break and grow up. There was a post back twords the end that states that they think an employee is monitoring this site. If that's the case, say so.
I opened a new account with my old bank today. They were happy to do so, and said that they have tons of people who switch from Compass to them because they are a fraud! Run from this bank, take your money to a respected bank, who does not have hundreds of angury customers.
I do have one thing for Compass. I'm an instructor, and one of my classes is Customer Satisfaction. Did you know Chole that an angury customer will tell on average 10 people about their bad experience, whereas a happy customer might tell 1. Scarry numbers. Lucky for me, I get to tell 1700 people about my bad experience with Compass Bank.
Best of luck to all of you. Don't get sucked into their games.

that is where your problem is. Not with the bank. It can only be done by the person with a register.

I can honestly say that Compass bank has a twisted way of doing banking that is borderline if not actual fraud. I had banked with Bank Of America for awhile and decide to also open an account at a local bank in Denver. I found compass because they have great checking features and an office near my house. BAD MISTAKE. I monitor my account religiously. Now keep in mind- My compass account is my "extra money" account and all my bill and savings money is done through BOA still. On July 17th I had a postivie balance of $44.00 in my account. When I woke up on the 18th I had 2 insuffcient funds from the prior day pending which threw 6 more charge into NSF fee status event though the money is take out ouf your account for the charge to pay it instantly. I called and asked for an explanation and they gave me some crap excuse of me being over on my total account so we charged you the fees which happened to be conveniently placed before the new charges coming in. I explained that my account was $44.00 postive on the closing of the 17th and the opening of the 18th so how could I have 2 overcharges. They could not explain to me why-but they were great at flip flopping charges. 3 supervisors later and no sensible explanation I gave up. I went to my bank and talked to the manager of my local branch and he looked it over and told me I was right and I was never negative. We called customer service together and the guy said the same crap. I pinned the guy down with facts and read right off of my statement. He said they have a different computer and it shows different numbers. Hmmmm..... My Manger did not have these numbers nor did I? How convenient. If i was over would it not show my account as negative? As far as a pending transaction goes- when you make a charge on your bank card the cash is taken instantly from your account to cover it. My available balance (not pending) was $44 postitive when they placed these two fees!!!! Im the first to admit when i screw up but I was in no way over on my account until they assed the "fraudulant" fees. They basically werent going to do squat for me. Im closing my account monday and filing a claim with the Federal reserve also. They will investigate the bank and your account and take appropriate action if needed. I suggest if you were honestly screwed by Compass that you do the same. Im furious and out of options. I work hard for my cash and I do not like banks stealing it!!!!

I had the same issue with compass. I get Direct deposit into my accout same time every week. I had wrote a check for my daughters daycare. I knew how much money I have in my account, Im even old school and keep a balanced check book, SO I know what I have to spend. One morning I check my account balance, I had a pending DD so my "available balance" was $$$$ amount. The check I wrote was also pending. AND because my check posed before my DD I had went ove my account.. I also pumped gas, it authroized my card for $1, accepted, pumped my gas, also wen into the store to buy oil, later on bought some food, Which lead to 3 od fee..
Looked at my account the next day. My dd was still "pending" but my Available balance reflected my DD... Hmm.... THATS odd. So I called the bank. NOTHING WE CAN DO MAMA, called 1800# nothing they could do either, had CORP call me. I got a mean old lady telling me the same thing "you need to learn how to balance you money" WHAT??? Are you serious. I get DD in my account same time every week, I keep a balanced Checkbook, check online all the time.. WTF are you serious. Needless to say they didnt do a d**n thing for me. I told the LADY WHO THE F$@( are you to tell me I don't know how to manage money??? I told her to F#(@ off and take the OD fee and shove them up you A$$...

Comment on a couple of things. 1st... Not to use ATM card for small purchases. Why not? That is completely and totally not an issue in any regards. If you have cash, great. If not, great. Either works, so I do not understand that statement at all.
Second, He did use his check register. He stated he had $7. Yes, not much, but still enough to cover the expenses he made in the morning.
Compass Banks has 173 complains against them!!! This is more then a one person deal here.
Also, don't you think it would be a decent and fair thing to notify a customer that there account has an issue with it and being put into a suspend status?
I think you are replying to the wrong points.

Last I heard this was a public forum where people are free to post facts and opinions as they please.
Assuming you are implying me:
"Who is this Chole person? Does she get paid good money to sit back and make comments on each and every post? Does she find it interesting? I find it interesting that at times she's claims to be an Ex-Employee, and others a comsumer, and on some posts seems to have private and privillaged information about people and circumstance. That were never in a post. So, where is she getting her information from if she's an Ex-Employee or a Consumer?"
Well, I guess one may never know!

#2 Consumer Suggestion
Use a CHECKBOOK REGISTER!! No "ripoff" here.
AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Saturday, July 12, 2008
There is no ripoff here other than your attempt to blame your own poor bookkeeping practices on someone else.
By your own admission, you do not keep an accurate checkbook register, as you clearly state you are checking your ONLINE statement to determine your "available" balance.
Also, making multiple small purchases like that cup of coffee is a VERY bad idea when using a debit card. It's downright stupid.
Carry some petty cash for those small purchases.
And, running your account down to $7 indicates that you need to re-evaluate your finances and overall financial condition. It appears that you are juggling.
Keep an accurate checkbook register , and follow what it says, and your NSF troubles will go away.
It is fairly obvious that you were already in a state of NSF prior to payday and making those 3 purchases. Then you compounded the problem by spending money that was not yet posted and available.
No rip off here.

that a bank is going to pay someone to sit and monitor only your account so that they can somehow, in your convoluted mind, just hold your deposit so that only you are NSF - which quite frankly you were well before the deposit. Checking online is NOT keeping an accurate register.
