My son is in a correctional facility in Alabama & has been there since March of 06. Since his incarceration we have nothing but problems with correctional billing sysytems. Our first phone bill was $338.00 & 1/2 of the calls we were cut off in mid converstion & about 1/4 of them our answering machine picked up on & we were charged for those calls.

Every time we would try to call CBS we wer put on hold for up to 1 & 1/2 hours befor anyone even bothered to get on the phone.

We are to the point that we are ready to get an attorney & SUE this company. If an Attorney would pick this up I'm sur that there are alot of other people out there that would be glad to have a class action lawsuit against this company.

Our son is a first time offender & we have never had to deal with the correction system befor. It is not fair that we are being charged the high prices of these collect calls when most of these families do not have those types of funds to pay these high phone bills just because we are trying to stand by our loved ones that are incarcerated.

CBS billing service

AUTHOR: Frank - (U.S.A.)

I do agree that CBS charges a high rate, but would rather be paying their rate for the calls than what is being charged by Barron county Wisconsin through IOS/ A T& T. CBS billing was 2.20+ tax per 15 minute call, but IOS for Barron County is $ 1.24 per minute for my wife to call from Barron Wisconsin ti St. Anthony Idaho. Thats $36.00 for 29 minutes.

Answering Machine

AUTHOR: Jennifer - (U.S.A.)

I'm in the Telecommunications field and can tell you that if an answering machine picks up a call, it is billed as a completed call. The Call Accounting system has no way of knowing that it was a machine picking up. You can possibly avoid some of this in the future but changing the setting on your answering machine to pick up after more rings, ie: 8 rings as opposed to 4 or 6. Then you can tell your son to hang up if you haven't answered by the 6th ring. I would not tell him to wait until the 7th ring because sometimes the amount of rings he is hearing is different from the number of rings you hear.

I can't address the cut offs because I have no way of knowing what is causing them. It is safe to assume that the telephone equipment in the prison is old and probably not in the best of repair.

I also cannot address the high charges. Correctional Billing has been under fire because of the extremely high rates they charge but they are allowed to continue to do so because they contract with the prison(s) and I'm sure the prisons are getting some of that money back.
