I heard a radio advertisement that stated JRP was coming to Charlotte, NC looking for youngsters/teens for an upcoming Raven Symone/Hillary Duff sitcom. We called the number and was told to come to the audition the next day. We were told to dress to impress. No jeans, t shirts, sneakers. We went to the audition and filled out an application and my son had to write an essay of why he felt he should be chosen.
Afterwards, a talent scout from LA said a few words. Then we were called in an office to speak with a rep. We were in there about 2 mins and they gave my son a Pepsi commercial to act out LIVE. needless to say, my son was terrific! he memorized that commercial and the talent scout was impressed. she was especially impressed by his physical size. he is rather small for his age. she said to me, "For a kid that is 13, he would be ideal for any part ages 8-12 because he is so small for his age but very bright!" Afterwards, we left the studio and was told that if he was selected, we would receive a phone call at home the next day. We did receive a call and we were so excited. we thought he had been chosen to come back for a second audition. At least that was the impression I received.
We arrived the next day, only to be sat down in an office with a booklet outlining the different acting programs they offer. I asked if my son had been chosen for a part?? The talent scout stated "If we were not impressed with you son, we would have not called him back! He never did audition for a part again. We were pressured by fake talent scouts into signing a contract for 20 weeks of acting classes for $1,950.00. I paid the cost assuming it would lead him down a career path in acting. Never once did the talent scout mention that they don't guarantee work! When I got home and looked over the contract, there it was in small print.. NO WORK GUARANTEED! That was on a Sunday. I called first thing Monday morning to cancel these classes. I continued getting the voicemail and leaving messages. No one ever called me. I went in person to speak with the Educator that same week and he informed me that it would be almost impossible to receive a refund. I told him that I called numerous times to cancel classes and no one responded to my requests. He told me there was nothing he could do. The only option was for me to place his classes on freeze! And that is what I did because I did not want him to take these unnecessary classes with no guarantee. I have been calling and emailing the company for months! No response to my concerns and no refund.
I want a full refund because this is a total scam! I guess I didn't really realize what was going on at the time because my son and I were over-whelmed when we received that second call. For anyone out there, John Robert Powers is a total scam! They lure you in with fake talent scouts and fake tactics. DO NOT fall for the phoney advertisement... I am looking for a refund of $1,950.00

There is no guarantee

Reading your response, I do not understand what the scam on you was. You were angry that there was no guarantee of work. You should be careful as you sound like a stage mom. No school and no agency EVER guarantees work. Just like ballet school doesn't guarantee that you will be a ballerina, just like Select Soccer can't guarantee you are going to get a scholarship to college, or a college degree cannot guarantee a six-figure salary. How in the world can someone guarantee work? What gaurantee can you have that your child won't be sick on the day of the audition? Or you wont be late because you cant find parking? Do you really think because he memorized a Pepsi commercial that he should be on TV? Do you think that it is difficult for television producers to find people to memorize three lines? If you are going to be a parent of an actor you are going to have to become much more realistic about the industry and the skills of acting, or you are going to create unrealistic expectations for your son that will be sure to disappoint him.

JRP is indeed a bad deal...

It's expensive, useless and JRP students are looked down upon by working people in the industry.
However, it's not technically a scam. JRP delivers what it promises to do in the contract for the specified price.
I do agree with the spirit of this report, stay away from JRP and never let anyone pressure you into signing a contract that you haven't had time to gover very carefully.
