United Airlines Excessive Charges. Ticket change, $130/ea on a $178/ea ticket. Highway robbery! San Francisco California

*Consumer Comment: Ticket change fees
A ticket costing $178 had to be changed. They charged me $130. This is ridiculous! I can understand something like $25, but not $130. This is nothing more than highway robbery!

I just think it is funny how one thread here can be complaining about oversold flights and another complaining about not being able to fly on any flight they want at any time without additional charges. Where do we get the seats for the people who what to fly at "their" convenience? Hmmm...no wonder we have trouble with oversolds. The new answer to flying at your convenience is a private jet!!!

Most of that cost was probably the difference in the cost of the fares. Example below:
I purchase a ticket from Spokane to Seattle on May 5th to fly out May 30th at 2pm. I purchase a NON-REFUNDABLE (cheap) ticket.
Cost: $152
On May 23rd I call and have to change my ticket to June 5th at 1pm.
Cost of that ticket if I were to buy it today (irregardless of the other ticket): $267
Total cost to me:
$25-50 Fee + $115 (difference in fares)
So in total, you paid only a fee. Because had you not purchased the original ticket, you would have paid the $267.
You should purchase refundable tickets, it makes life easier. If you do this, however, you would still be charged the difference in fare. That is only right.
Learn the rules before you fly.

It is interesting how you purchased a NON-REFUNDABLE TICKET, and then cry "highway robbery" when you are assessed a fee for changing said ticket.
Yes, non-refundable tickets cost less than a fully refundable one, which is why many people choose to go that route. But that does not change the fact that NON-REFUNDABLE MEANS NON-REFUNDABLE. You cannot change it, cannot cancel it, or anything else unless you pay the difference to upgrade to a fully-refundable ticket!!!
