In early 2024, I brought my Hyundai Sonata to a dealership because the vehicle was burning oil at an abnormal rate. I was having to purchase and refill oil weekly, which is not normal or sustainable. I explained that I believed there was a serious oil leak, and that my engine light and oil light were turning on and off constantly.

The dealership diagnosed the issue as a cracked oil pan and said it was fixed. However, as soon as I got the car back, the same issues continued. I was still burning through oil rapidly, still adding quarts weekly, and still getting intermittent warning lights. I contacted the dealership again and brought it back, only to be told everything was fine and the oil burning was “normal.”

This was not normal. After repeatedly trying to get help and being dismissed, my engine eventually failed. The car would not start. An independent, licensed mechanic inspected the vehicle and confirmed multiple oil leaks and engine damage that had been ongoing. This was the same issue I initially reported — the same problem the dealership should’ve properly addressed in the first place.

The stress of this has been overwhelming. I’m a parent, and now I’ve been left without a working car and with a massive financial burden. I filed complaints with BBB, Consumer Affairs, and NHTSA, and I’m sharing my story here to warn others: Hyundai and its service centers do not stand behind their vehicles or honor the safety and trust of their customers.

All I wanted was for someone to take the issue seriously and prevent further damage. Instead, I was misled, dismissed, and left with a non-running vehicle after spending hundreds on oil, repairs, and diagnostics.

Oil light

AUTHOR: Flint - (United States)

POSTED: Friday, July 04, 2025

First, any old enough car has multiple oil leaks.  Seals last 5-10 years before they start leaking.  Unless you are seeing puddles of oil under your car every morning, that's not your problem, it is much more likely due to internal engine parts.  You can check for oil burning by standing behind the car, letting it idle for a while, and then having someone give it a lot of gas suddenly.  If you see blue smoke, your engine is burning oil.

The oil light means ENGINE DAMAGE IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW.  You need to IMMEDIATELY turn the car off and either add oil or call a tow truck.  But the damage is entirely on you.  Even if the car needed a gallon of oil a day, it's still your responsibility to check the oil level frequently enough to keep it at the proper level.

If you had kept the oil level where it was supposed to be, there would be no engine damage.  The fact that you were getting oil light activation means you weren't keeping the oil full.  In fact, the whole problem could have been a result of letting the oil run low once, or not keeping up with oil changes.  99% of the time, burning oil is a result of negligent car maintenance.

Finally, the dealership is the worst place to bring a used car.  Dealership mechanics often have no idea what they are doing with used cars, since 95% of what they do is warranty work on new cars.  Their prices are also extremely high.  But the only thing that would have fixed the issue is a new engine.

Forget BBB and Dealerships

AUTHOR: Irv - (United States)

The BBB is a PAY-FOR-PLAY SCAM and is NOT a government agency thus has ZERO POWER over any business. Unless the factory warranty is still in effect, NEVER g into a dealer shop. You are GUARANTEED PRICE GOUGING and service will be by commissioned parts changers. Find and use an independent shop where you will find much better prices and customer service rather than lying, deceptive dealership slime.
