I went to aamco after getting stuck in the snow and having to drive and reverse repeatedly. I knew i had a problem, but i didnt know how severe. I have experience working on cars, but not transmissions, so i figured id get it looked at by a pro. Its a 1992 lexus BTW so even though its very old and i bought it used, they figured i had money and knew nothing about cars...they were wrong about the former and the latter. When i DROVE my cat there the next day, i figured it might just be low fluid or a clogged tranny filter because it drove much better after cooling down overnight, but it still didnt shift properly so i decided to take it in... BIG MISTAKE.

They said to leave it with them, "overnight", of course and they would call me the next day with a diagnosis. Of course they said it needed to be rebuilt for $2000 and i foolishly said ok because i was working full time and didnt have time to mess with it myself, i just wanted it done. Anyway they "REBUILT"it with a 12 month warranty and 5 months later it wouldnt shift into 2nd gear. I called them and they said to leave it with them overnight again for another diagnosis. They called me at work to tell me that it wasnt their fault, but that it was my engine that was the problem... again they assumed i knew nothing about cars, so i told them i would come in at lunch to see how they came to this so called conclusion which made them liable for nothing.

I insisted that i knew it was the transmission but they continued to BS me so i just went there. Upon arrival the owner told me not to make accusations about their work until i knew the "facts" and his mechanic would take me on a test drive to show me it was not their fault. Just walking to the car the guy started giving me all kinds of excuses as to why the problem was the engine and not the transmission. Having experience working on cars i quickly disproved his explanations. He thought i was just a stupid college kid with money.

As we drove he continued naming parts which "could be" broken, and the funny thing was i had replaced these parts myself within the past few months, including the fuel filter, the exhaust system, and the oil pan... He finally told me it was the throttle positioning sensor, at which point the entire car started jerking violently and wouldn't go into 2nd gear. I looked at him very pissed off and said, "that's the f***in transmission! " He finally lowered his head in shame and agreed. When we got back to the shop the owner was waiting with a grin...when the mechanic told him it was their fault the grin quickly changed to an apology. I cant believe how persistent i had to be to prove this was their fault.

If i hadn't had mechanical experience i wouldn't have been able to fight just to make a warranty claim. When they finished the second time they told me it was difficult because it had been rebuilt before... yeah it had been...by them! Lol. It broke down again about a year later go figure which just shows that they are not only rip offs but they do extremely poor work. A rebulit tranny should last several years, not 5 months and then 11. If u ever need a new transmission just buy a new or remanufactured one lime i ended up doing. Just please dont go to AAMCO! It should stand for Automotive Association of Massive COns!

A side note to the disgruntled AAMCO employee

I was also curious why you failed to mention which "reputable" shop u work at, and why you listed your author name as "mechanic" in your rebuttal? Is there any reason u couldn't use even your first name when writing your excuses to defend crooked transmission shops. Also you failed to mention WHICH AAMCO YOU WORK AT! If u do indeed work at a reputable place of business wouldn't u mention it in your rebuttal? Not to mention if u do good work at an honest shop, why did u even bother to respond to my report? A good shop does not need to defend its trade because it should have a good reputation and plenty of customers. It sounds to me like u r just mad cuz ur schemes are being exposed! Im guessing u work at the AAMCO i went to, or another shady one just like it, which explains why u got so defensive and even bothered to respond to my report. If u were simply defending your trade u wouldn't have any need to insult my intelligence about cars as u did. I have a 160 IQ by the way, so i think i know what im talking about. Also, did u happen to notice the vast amount of other complaints about AAMCO on this website? That in itself should tell u somethin...

To whoever wrote the uninformed rebuttal to my report, ill have you know that i know plenty about cars. If not the AAMCO that tried to rip me off would have done so successfully! The only reason they didnt get out of their warranty agreement is because i have experience working on cars, so dont tell me i don't know much about them. If u actually read my report thoroughly, you would have seen that i reported my complaint specifically about the Columbus, OH location that i went to. I wasnt referring to every transmission shop out there. Unless you work at the shop i went to, i wasn't referring to your place of employment. I never said that all tranny shops are corrupt, although the majority of mechanics in any shop are, not just transmissions. Thats why i learned to do things myself. I commend you if you work at a reputable shop and take pride in your work, its just hard to find places like that. Even some of the places that do good work are still thinking about the clock so they hurry and you end up with a few bolts missing or stripped out that 'werent important', or they have an unsupervised rookie who makes an honest mistake. Anyway you sounded awfully defensive in your rebuttal which makes me wonder if u own or work at the AAMCO i went to. If not then its ok to defend your trade, but don't insult my intelligence in doing so. I wrote my report simply to protect people from being ripped off by the Columbus, OH shop i went to, or any other crooked and shady shop.

Also you mentioned that a reman tranny is the same as a rebuit one, except a person knows who did the rebuild if they go to a tranny shop. That is a lie which makes me think u are trying to convince innocent victims to get a rebuild from you instead of a remanufactured tranny. Any mechanic knows that a remanufactured tranny has every clutch, steel, and seal replaced brand new along with any other part that is still produced for that model. The only old part of it should be the housing and valve body, basically any part they dont manufacture brand new due to the age of the car. Even then these parts are machined to remove any imperfections due to wear.

So dont try to decieve people into thinking a reman is the same as a rebuild. Im sure some companies that sell remans dont replace everything, like you guys that REBUILD them, but if you buy a reman from a reputable quality company you will have a brand new transmission. Why do you think i got a 5 year warranty on my reman versus the 1 year warranty that AAMCO offers. Do you guys even test it on a dyno after u rebuild it? I seriously doubt it... Again im not insulting all rebuild shops, and if u work at a good one, then im glad there are a few honest mechanics still out there. However i would only recommend a rebuild to those who cant afford a new or remanufactured transmission. Keep in mind though AAMCO ripped me off $2000 for my rebuild, and the reman i bought was only $800 more. Do the math. 1yr warranty vs. 5yr warranty ... If a shop that rebuilds like AAMCO is so confident in their work, then why dont they offer at LEAST a 3yr warranty? ?? That in itself should tell you something about the quality and care they put into their work.

Aamco transmissions

As an employee of an aamco transmission i would like to say that all Aamco,s are independently owned. Not all of these shops rip consumers off. My peticular shop works very hard to cater to our customers. We rebuild every transmission (only the ones that need to be overhauled ) to manufacture specs. Also if you go buy a remanufactured transmission what do you think your getting there. someone, ( who knows who) rebuilt that transmission. Atleast if you have your transmission overhauled at a shop you know who worked on it. Personally it sounds like you dont know all that much about cars after all. Everyone has ther own opinion but its important that not only yours is heard
