I questioned a charge by Amazon.com, which appeared on my credit card for something I had no knowledge of. In response to this I received an email from Amazon that since my credit card company had reversed the payment of this charge, I had an unpaid item on my account and my account was therefore "frozen".

I was able to have them "unfreeze" my account, but wonder how many people drop their inquiry as to an unknown charge by Amazon after receiving an email that their account was "frozen".

I have emailed Amazon regarding this exploitive conduct, but have received no reply.

#3 Consumer Suggestion

Consumer suggestion #3

AUTHOR: Dr H - (USA)

POSTED: Wednesday, June 29, 2011

Amazon does have better customer service than many on-line sellers, but there is still al lot of room for improvement.  One annoying thing is that when you receive an e-mail from their customer service department you can't respond directly to it, but have to follow a link to the Amazon site to respond, which makes it a pain to keep a record of both sides of the communication.  Also, when I have contacted customer support about a problem, it almost never seems to  be the same person responding to my e-mail twice in a row.  Still, they do seem to try to help.

One way I can readily think of that a spurious Amazon charge might appear on a credit statement is this:  if you ordered several items and one was out of stock, you may have received all but the one item, and then forgotten about it.  I did this once, and two months later Amazon located a copy of the missing item and sent it to me.  Since they don't charge your card until they ship, I too was surprised to see the apparently spontaneous Amazon charge show up on my statement.  When I received the item the mystery was cleared up.  The moral here is, if you don't receive a complete shipment, contact Amazon and let them know if you either a) want them to keep searching for the item, or b) want to cancel the order for that item.  Theoretically, if something's not in stock, they will contact you to ask this question -- but in practice that doesn't always happen.

Regarding the consumer who bought the '65" TV from Amazon,' of course you most likely did -not- buy that TV from -Amazon-, but from one of their third-party "Amazon sellers".  And you were lucky, because if you had had a dispute over that purchase there is a good chance that Amazon wouldn't have been able to help you.   They really don't seem to have much of a system in place for resolving conflicts with third-party sellers.  Their main leverage is that they can boot the seller out of the Amazon sellers pool, but that doesn't really do you any good if you're still out $1500 for a TV that arrived defective.  If you buy anything other than books from Amazon, you need to be very careful that you are actually buying -from Amazon-, and if not, you need to research the seller you -are- buying for separately and carefully.

Amazon's Customer Service is Top-Notch

AUTHOR: FrequentOnlineShopper - (United States of America)

Amazon has a great return policy. I have a prime membership, and I love love love this company's customer service. I especially like the customer reviews. It makes my shopping much simpler. I purchased a 65" HDTV from them in August 2010 for my fiance's birthday. They not only delivered it free in two days, they brought it in the living room and set it up! They were awesome. The only time I have ever returned an item was when I purchased a Christmas gift for a person my family member broke up with prior to the holidays. They made that process smooth, also. In fact, I was able to chat real time with someone to ensure I fully understood the return process and nothing got lost or delayed. In the hundreds of items I have purchased from them, my fiance has purchased from them, or any of the family that we have on our prime membership, all the various credit and debit cards we have stored on the site, never once has an unauthorized charge occurred from them. I wish I could say the same for some other companies. I shop online a LOT, and I had to file two unauthorized purchase disputes with my bank this past year, but not from Amazon. I shop Amazon with confidence. When I HAVE had to file a dispute with the bank, it was a LAST resort when it was clear I would get no resolution or even response from a scamming company. Amazon is far from that. I hope you are able to experience their stellar service in the future and view them in a more positive light.

They have an online help center. This is where your first stop should have been. Good business is the responsibility of both the seller and the consumer. http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_sn_chng?nodeId=595034

Too Many Holes In The Story

AUTHOR: Jacob - (USA)

POSTED: Friday, February 04, 2011

Amazon is more ethical than the vast majority of stores out there. For a charge from them to just show up spontaneously on your card for no reason, is virtually unheard of.

I'm not really convinced it isn't something you (or someone you know) just ordered and forgot about, but even if it is an erroneous charge, did you even try contacting Amazon before disputing the charge? Amazon usually has great customer service, and you took drastic action against them that may not have been necessary. In fact, there are many online stores that would never let you shop from them again after doing something like this.
