Ancestry most definitely are criminals!
I feel as if I have been mugged. I am so upset.

Regarding their offer of 'two weeks free trial' I had filled in the form on their site, clicked on the ONE MONTH subscription option, then used the submit button.
As the page disappeared, I thought I saw the dot change to the 'yearly' choice, but wasn't sure.

That is my first complaint against Ancestry, stealing 83 pound from my bank account, without my authority.

Trusting them with my debit card details (as a formality, I understood) to obtain the 'free trial' which turns out to be a lie, NOT a trial and NOT free!
==================

My second grievance:- I had cancelled my subscription few days prior to them stealing my money.
I filled in the cancellation form as they require, on the 8/8/08, two days before the time limit.

Ancestry were very crafty, I kept an eye on my Online banking {they took the money on the 12th; my bank told me} which showed in my Online account on the 14th.
The date I was given by them, for the end of the 'Not free trial' was the 10/8/08. Probably giving their victims, an extra few days to forget to be aware.

I am a pensioner, on a state pension and have to watch my every penny, this large amount of money (maybe not to other people but it is to me) constitutes about three months heating finances to me, so I can expect a cold autumn {the weather in Wales, this summer, imitating the autumn season already, wet cold and windy}

I am not going to accept this company stealing my money, I shall do whatever/wherever I can (a drop in the ocean, but maybe a storm will brew) contact newspapers/Online sites, that will accept my complaint.

My thanks to this marvelous site.

I feel quite helpless, am shocked, but will do what little I can, important to alert other potential victims. Do not expect to recover my money.

Intend to discuss this issue with my trading Standards Office after the weekend, regarding the absolute lie of the 'Free Trial' description, which it is not, it is an 'extension' to an enforced yearly subscription!

I will withdraw from all the Ancestry affiliated Genealogy sites, spread word of mouth, and by email, to my friends/contacts, that are involved with this fraudulent organisation, warning them to be wary.

I had heard from friends that this might happen, resisted for ages (have been tracing my ancestors for years, researching for myself and friends) then ended up giving Ancestry the benefit of the doubt, intending to use the 'monthly' subscription, when I needed and could afford it.

I have my tree on Genes Reunited, have been with AOL as my provider for many years, are these affiliated organisation? What a sad situation, I will not deal with criminals, will have to forgo my contact with them too.

Thank you for listening to my irritation/indignation everyone. I am grateful to 'Rip Off' for providing this site to air my frustrations.

Warm Wishes, Linda.

Update on my previous complaint regarding Ancestry.com

AUTHOR: Lima - (United Kingdom)

POSTED: Monday, August 18, 2008

I would like to post an update of my latest contact with Ancestry.com regarding my previous complaint please.

In an effort to be fair to Ancestry, I need to convey their willingness to give me a refund, which I will receive in five days. I have had a confirmation email and a cancellation number. So am now a satisfied customer.

A friend had sent me a UK contact phone number (a free 0800 number). I had not been able to locate one previously.

The contact assistant was very pleasant, as was I. So the conversation was stress free.

She explained that I probably did not complete the cancellation steps (I said I was sure I had).
She said I should have received a confirmation email. I told her that was when I became worried, when I had not receive one.

She agreed straight away to refund the whole amount of 83 to my bank account, which will take five days.

I think the problem was perpetuated in my own case, by the [what I consider to be] seemingly inaccessibility of Ancestry.com.

If a contact phone number for the relevant country; is posted on their site - clearly: in an obvious place, problems could be discussed quickly, before suspicion and resentment sets in, on the part of the customer.

So I need to retract my initial complaint please, and hope those remaining frustrated customers have the fair treatment I have had, and recover their lost money, good luck, it is such a shock to have unauthorised, unaffordable, money deducted from ones bank account.
Thank you 'Rip Off' site, you are a treasure.
Linda.
