After making regular payments to Assurity for term life insurance for over 12 years, mostly online, I decided to go with their invitation to have payments automatically taken out of my checking account. They sent me paperwork to sign and return. I mailed it back complete the very next day.
The first month passed and I received a notice of late payment. I called and was told the automatic payments had likely not been set up in time for this payment, so I did a payment online, no problem. The next month, I got another notice of late payment. I figured it must be a computer error. I called several times.
And then the kicker: my policy was canceled (I was one month overdue). I called and inquired about this affront. They stated that they had never received my request & paperwork for automatic payments. They denied ever getting my phone calls. And lastly, they refused to make it right. I would gladly have made up any late payments; it was never my intention for a payment to not be paid. When I explained my dilemma, the error, misunderstanding or whatever you want to call it, they acted as though I was lying to them.
I had to apply for re-instatement. Then (surprise of all surprises), they slapped me in the face and denied coverage. Why? Because I answered honestly about medications I take, to (very well, I might add) control high blood pressure (they would prefer I not control it, I suppose). I also should say that almost the entire 12 years I have held a paid policy with this company, I have been on medication for the same. Aren't MOST folks in my age category on blood pressure meds? Seriously.
What changed? Well, for one thing, I was 48 when I initiated the policy; I am now 61. I have the feeling this whole thing was simply to unload me before they might have to pay out. I feel like they took my money and ran with it. I feel robbed of my family's security. This should not be any company's policy for dealing with this sort of thing. It is not fair. It is unethical.
So, I warn all who are thinking to get a policy with Assurity. When they dump you, it is hard to find another. And they will dump you.
Assurity: you are a sorry company and you should be ashamed to do business this way.
