I had a credit card in 2000 with Bank of America. I paid it off and ended the account, or so I thought. 7 years later I found that they had just placed negative info on my credit report. I called to investigate. They said "You had a credit card with a $50 balance. You didn't pay." I said "I haven't had a card with B of A for years." They said "Our information is correct." When you get a negative on your credit report it lasts 7-10 years. B of A waited 7 years to report their $50 non-payment, didn't bother to contact me. So now this will be on my credit for another 7 years. I certainly would have paid the $50 if I'd known about it.

I understand how you must feel. BOA reported me to Check Systems, saying I owed them money. I asked for proof. When they "searched" their records for my debt they charged me for that. I had to fight to get that money back. They have never supplied any proof of the debt. I was never told I could dispute this or how to. The only funny part to me is that while they reported me to Check Systems, blocking me from opening an account with many banks in the country they opened a checking account for me. If I were a bank belonging to Check Systems I would wonder how many folks BOA is getting me to turn away and at the same time opening accounts for them. Once I was out of Check Systems I went to another bank. I would never recommend them to anyone ever.

You are probably not being reported by Bank of America but by a Third Party Collection Agency that was sold the debt. In fact in 7 years this is probably the 3rd or 4th CA that has had the debt.
The Fair Credit Reporting Act(FCRA) states that a negative item can remain on your credit report for 7 years from the date of the negative action. In this case it would be the date that Bank of America "Charged Off" the account. Based on what you said this would have happened anywhere from 2000 to early 2001. No matter what happens or what you do there is NO action or situation where this date can be re-aged or reset. If so this is a violation of the FCRA. So it will not be on your credit report for another 7 years.
In fact it appears you should be beyond the 7 years now. So you can get it removed. You need to send in a dispute to the Credit Bureau(s) that are listing the debt. State that it is beyond the credit reporting period and you want the item removed per the FCRA.

With the Federal Trade Commission and Office of Thrift Supervision -BOTH
Cite violations of the Fair Credit Reporting Act - you will find more info this on the Federal Trade Commission website
You have to do both as FTC maintains a complaint data base only.
Office of Thrift Supervision will actually work to resolve the issue for you, since BOA will not acknowledge their mistake.
