I don't find the old report so I am unable to do an update, but this is too funny/ridiculous not to report.

Background:

Approximately 3 years ago, I purchased a ~$2000.00 Sony LCD TV from Best Buy, Salem, Oregon store. This included their 3 year extended warranty. Within a month the TV failed by routinely dropping channels. At least once every day I must go through the 50 minute Initial Scan to get it to receive all of the channels. This was initially reported to the Salem store, but due to ongoing telephone problems at that store, the manager at the Tualatin, Oregon store said that he could help me.

A technician was sent to do diagnostics, wrote in his report that the TV was defective, and recommended calling Sony Customer Service. (I never fully understood this advice.) Sony said I would have to personally pay their technician if they responded to this problem, and advised me to call Best Buy again. The manager at the Tualatin store said they would replace the TV.

A technician from Wolf Electronics arrived (not the same company as the first tech) and began work on the TV. I asked him why this was needed since he was just replacing it. He said he wasn't there to replace it; he was there to run diagnostics to find the problem. (He had not been informed that this had already been done.) I asked him to leave and I would call Best Buy yet again.

* He refused to leave and became belligerent and threatening about stopping work. I had to call my local police department and have them physically remove him from my property.

I filed a Small Claims Court action against Best Buy, which was referred to their out-of-state corporate headquarters. I received a default judgment against Best Buy. However it was impossible to collect from Best Buy corporate.

A few weeks later, Sony sent me a questionnaire about the service call from Best Buy. I responded with the above information, including the call to the police, but never heard from them again.

Today:

I received a notice in the mail from Best Buy to renew my warranty for a mere $188.99 for another 3 years. When I called the listed Protection Plan phone number, they said since it was so long ago, they could not do anything about it now (even though it is still under warranty for another 2 weeks), but they would still be happy to renew the warranty!

PS: Professionally, I am an independent Information Technology Consultant. For the last 3 years I have thoroughly enjoyed sharing my personal experience with Best Buy products and warranty service. Based upon my recommendations to clients, I estimate Best Buy has missed getting in excess of $50,000.00 in revenue.
