I returned from an overseas assignment and was assigned to a local unit in the Phoenix area and needed transportation. I looked at a couple of dealerships and knew I wanted to get either a truck or an SUV.

I found a decent deal at Bill Heard Chevrolet for a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 24,000 miles on it and I went thru the finance department to see what I would qualify for. I would have gone thru my bank but I had just finished paying off over $20,000 in credit card debt and didnt think I would qualify.

The original offer was $19,000 plus tax, title and license and $2,000 down with an 18% interest rate. I felt this was a little high so I told them I wasn't interested. They told me I couldn't get a better interest rate since the credit report didnt show my having a car loan in the past. I was 30 years old at the time and told them I had a couple of car loans, one of which was solely in my name in 1996, the rest were co-signed. I had spent 7 out of the previous 12 years overseas and either didn't need vehicle due to mass transit or bought clunkers for $500 and drove them into the ground.

I identified the previous vehicle I had financed in 1996 and they went back to seeing if they could qualify me for the loan. They returned and told me I could get the interest rate lowered to 13% so I agreed to the loan. I told them that since I was in the military and my home of record was in Illinois that I didn't have to pay the Arizona registration tax which would have come out to over $600 and that all I had to pay to get a vehicle registered was the $22.60 for registration to get my plates.

I then found out that I could also get my own plates from Illinois since I was a veteran but the dealership had to send in the registration info here and could refund me later when I got my affidavit signed by my commander and my plates from Illinois. Well the plates from Illinois proved to be too difficult to do since I was still in Arizona so I just went with the Arizona plates but I still wasn't required to pay the full registration tax that Arizona residents pay. I was expecting a refund of approximately $600 but when I went in to finish the paperwork they told me I had to redo the finance contract because of the change in registration and they would apply the $600 towards the downpayment and lower my monthly payments.

When I signed the contracts the second time I didnt notice the error even though I questioned the lack of a lower payment and no refund. I noticed a day later when I was re-reading the contract that the interest rate was now up from 13% to 16%?? Guess I should have read the contract a little closer. I attempted to work this out with their finance department but I didnt have the original contract because the finance guy took it from me when I signed the new one.

I attempted to get a copy of the original contract but the finance department failed to respond to my phone calls and said they were working on it but never responded even though I went into the dealership numerous times to complain about it.

I'll never go to a Chevrolet dealership again. Not with the way they screwed me out of a few bucks. Funny thing is after I traded the Jeep in they sent me an email stating they were going to give me a great deal on it because they had a need to buy a lot of them in the near future.

I laughed when I got that. I wouldn't step onto their lot if you paid me.

Wow... I used to sell cars, and let me tell you...that is the most powerful tool you can use! As a salesman, I could never advise a customer to do that for fear of losing my job...but, I have seen that work many times! They try to work a customer up so much that they will put of with the bs and sign anything to get a car and after that...they don't care how much you cry about the shaft you just got. They brag about how much they screwed you and laugh about...this tactic will show them who is the boss! And if they don't follow you to the car and beg...there are many other places that will.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

They always lower the numbers the closer you get to the front door.

Hey James what happened to you is done all the time. In the auto indusrty they call "re-contracting" a "Yank" or a "Spot Delivery" You know they get you into the dealership with all kinds of BS promises. They get you in love with some P. O. S. that is way over priced and make you think they are giving you some kind of special deal.

You know make you "FEEL GOOD" They bring you to their "BOX" better known as their F&I Department. That guy will try to sell you an over price extended warranty for maybe 3 or 4 times what they paid for it. Maybe try to slap a life insurance policy in on the contract. Maybe they will try to sell you a way over priced car alarm that some crack head installed for $59 bucks then have you pay $299 for it.

What ever a car dealer can sell you is what they will pound in your face until you pop or drop. No car dealer will ever let an untrained person work as a F&I person unless they show they have the ability to sell you anything and everything. You will never find a weak sales person in that seat.

I would like you to check a few Rip Off Reports out and see what others are saying about their car dealers.

Read this one. it will get your goat under the water. Look at to what they did to her credit app before they sent it to a bank. Can you say "Banking Fraud"? Go look at the PIC of her credit app. I have a very clear copy of it. I have a good Idea as to what they did to her.

Next: I feel that you might like to read about a "Combat Vet" Who is no longer with us. A guy who proudly severed our country is now DEAD! Can't say what pushed this proud man over the limit, but I can say he is now DEAD!

Maybe I can ask you as a Vet to post your thoughts or feelings on it.

Hey James Feel free to post your thoughts on any Rip Off Report. Car dealers need to know that they are being exposed for how they treat car buyers. Personally I feel that the car makers do not care as to what s**t we have to deal with just to take a test drive, much less buy a car.

I am willing to bet big money that you could have gotten a much lower interest rate at a credit union. The dealer might have just wanted to increase their "Backend Gross" By the way did they ever tell you what your Fair Isaac Score was? If you have a 680 or better, you should have gotten a better rate.

What car buyers need to do just before they sign a d**n thing in the "BOX" is get up and tell the "Lie Nance manger" The following Just after they get all documentation printed up and ready for you to sign.

Say this "Hey I think this deal SUCKS' I am going to go home and SLEEP on this set of numbers you gave me. Call me when you get done removing your pencil from your sharpener "Lets go over these numbers to morrow. Maybe you can s**t some better numbers tomorrow"

No F&I person wants to go through all of their BS SPEW and then have you get up and walk out on them. Trust me they will RUN to the sales tower and cry that they can't get you to sign the "SUCKER"S deal.

Then a bunch of A. Hole closers will march in and try to sucker you into sign their BS. get up and walk out! Watch the numbers fall to the floor real fast!

The fast way to get them to give you a better deal is to move your shoes closer to the front door. Trust me it works, and it's fun to watch them shake in their boots thinking they just lost a car deal.

I say "F" them and their "Rocket pencil" numbers. They always lower the numbers the closer you get to the front door. Don't be too fast to trust your local Realtor ether. Many people that sell real-estate are X car sales people. They will never tell you if they sold cars for a living.

By the way James. Go to google.com and do a search on Bill Heard Chevrolet. See how many Rip Off Reports pop up.

Please post the new thoughts that you now have!
