I applied to Buckeye to become a part time, Uniform Security Guard. Bethann, and Sonny (the scheduling officers) seemed like nice, generous, and overall good people to work for. They even gave me two new white uniform shirts as a promise that they would have work for me.

During the time of my hiring, the Football Hall of Fame was beginning its enshrinement ceremony, and Buckeye is their security provider. So my first job with them was at the Hall of Fame, and they loaned me a bright green shirt. They had a limited amount of neon green shirts, so they only issued me one.

The first day of the job went fine, I worked for twelve hours (guarding a vacant lot) and then right on time, my relief showed up. The second day, they had me guarding a different lot and I was scheduled for nine hours. After thirteen hours, I was still standing there, attempting to get in touch with Bethann who was not answering her cell phone. On the third day, I got to my post at five in the morning, was scheduled to leave at two, but after a scorching hot fifteen hours, I was still standing there, and finally walked off the post at eight. I worked for an additional two days, and over the course of five days had accrued fifty-seven hours.

Stupid me, still thought I was working for a reliable company and would exhaust my water reserves during my regular shift hours, and they wouldn't allow me to leave the post to get more. Bethann would occasionally drive around in a golf cart and hand out water, but on multiple occasions, she would drive right past me. One time I even called her over to get water, and she stopped, mouth the words "I don't want to deal with you," and drove away. It got the point where I was relying on the kindness of the construction workers and maintenance crew to give me water.

In the weeks after the Hall of fame, I had to call Bethann numerous times and left her many messages, before I was able to talk to her about my next post. I went back to Buckeye to return the green uniform shirt and submit my hours. Sonny examined the shirt(which I HAD to wear for five days) and said that it wasn't clean enough and that I ruined it, so they were going to deduct $14.00 out of my pay. That was fine by me, because he gave me the shirt to keep, for their next special event.

I eventually tired of calling Bethann and began seeking more substantial employment. Then, out of nowhere she called me, while I was outside and couldn't get the phone. She didn't leave a message, so I didn't know she called me. The next day she called me again, and left me a message of white noise before she hung up. About an hour latter, while I was still elsewhere she finally left a message about having work for me, but because I wouldn't answer the phone, she had to assign another guard to the post. She also claimed to need my school schedule, so she knew when I could be posted.

I walked into Buckeye, and Sonny immediately said "O, heres the guy who you can't get in touch with."

I attempt to give Bethann my schedule (which I had given her twice before), and she just said, "I don't want to talk to you. If you don't want to work, then thats your problem."

After over a week, I had not heard word one from Buckeye, so I E-mailed my letter of resignation to Bethann. Then Sonny called me on my cellphone (which is always plugged into my car charger) at eight thirty and demanded I bring his uniforms back. Unfortunately, I don't check my cellphone for new calls and messages, so I didn't receive Sonny's demand until after Buckeye was closed for the day. The very next day (at seven in the morning), the general manager of Buckeye Protective Services was pounding on my back door saying that if I didn't return their two uniform shirts, he was going to call the police.

Buckeye ripped me off the time that I could have spent getting a better job. Sure I got $430.00 from the Hall of Fame event, but I made $570.00, and over half of the deductions went to Buckeye (for my "free" training coarse, Ohio security officer registration fee, and the green uniform I apparently ruined). The employees of Buckeye were getting their family members to work shifts at the Hall of Fame, and Buckeye was just handing them a shirt and telling them where to stand. If thats basically what they did to me, then how come I had to pay $50.00 for the privilege?

Buckeye Home of Amateurs

AUTHOR: King Dremel - ()

POSTED: Wednesday, November 13, 2013

Buckeye Protective Service is a joke. I've never met so many wannabes in one place in my life.

Bethann is a blow-hard at best. There isn't a single ounce of professionalism in this creature. I remember she had a death threat from a former employee (I imagine she's had many) and the woman hid like a little girl. She wouldn't even take phone calls. Sonny and Walt laughed at her!

Sonny, hardly someone you'd want to rely on. The man can barely move.

Walt, a wannabe. He teaches people to tell shoplifters, "I'm sorry, you forgot to pay for that." FORGOT? What a knot head. All the thief has to say is, "Oh, thank you, I did forget to pay for it." Then go back and pay for it!

Walt's advice when facing someone trying to knock your head off, "Duck". Obviously this man has never been in a real violent confrontation.

And thinking of shoplifting.. Buckeye hasn't a clue. They are a bunch of liars. In the state of Ohio you MUST KEEP YOUR EYES ON THE SHOPLIFTER AT ALL TIMES.. this is impossible. It is also a good way to get sued because no one can keep their eyes on a moving target in a store 100% of the time. I challenge anyone to try.

Actually, there is more money to be made in setting up "Store Detectives" then there is in stealing anything. It's a loser's game.

Buckeye Central Station, a case of total chaos and mismanagement. An embarassment. I remember trying to talk to a priest who's church was broken into and my SUPERVISOR, Jen, yelling at her kids (which had no business being in Central Station) Mother F'ng them in the background! Idiot.

Bethann will lie to your face. And she'll lie about you. She's told people I've never worked there! Mmm.. my W-2 and UNIFORM (Ha!) says otherwise! This tells people she's a liar and that Buckeye can not be trusted. Which is why.. THANK GOD.. they were booted from their BIGGEST ACCOUNT.. my current employers.

The best thing you can do is to avoid this hack outfit. The second best thing you can do, if you find yourself working there because of your situation.. is to plan on never using them on your resume. To use Buckeye on your resume is a BLACK EYE. DON'T DO IT. Just plan from the start that you will have another story to fill in the time you're at Buckeye.

A guard once told me, "You'll be glad to have a gun!" He said he "always aim for the head" I asked him how many people has he shot. Silence. One more Buckeye idiot exposed. I wouldn't give these knot heads spoons as weapons.

Professional Security response

AUTHOR: Dwight Huth - (U.S.A.)

I served as a uniformed armed and un-armed security officer for two and a half years in Columbus, Ohio.

I did post duty and patrol ranging from 8 hours to 10 hours daily five days a week.
At first I was issued a company T-shirt and was provided with a duty belt minus
service sidearm until I was OPOTA certified to carry a sidearm on my person for the purpose of providing security to people and property.

It is not unusual to test a new guard/officer in this manner. My first post consisted of sitting at the back of a cigarette outlet that had been vandalized and had property stolen. The Vice President/President of the patrol officers did give me a portable T.V. to watch and I was allowed to leave the property at my discretion to get a drink or use the restroom facilities. The difference between my post and your post is your post was a high profile post needing the constant attention of a security guard so that property was not taken and then sold over the internet or possibly on the Black Market. You have to remember what the Hall of Fame is, It is not a night at Eastbury Bowling or a arranged slumber party,it is a gathering of professional atheletes that make hundreds of millions of dollars that are being inducted into the Hall of Fame. A trophy or other object of theirs worth sentimental value to the enshrinees could be worth millions to a collector or other individual looking to steal the object. There are also people that would vandalise the area just because their athelete didnt get inducted and they thought they might get revenge for that person not being inducted. The list of possible's and hypothetical's are numerous in this type of situation.

Granted a rotating guard or duty OIC should have been established to allow for hydration breaks and restroom breaks. Perhaps the security company in question did not have enough staffing to provide the rotating guard to allow for this. Another solution is to bring your own water. By bringing your own water you could have eleviated the hot day by having an adequate supply at the ready. It is also best to drink water the night before any long engagement. This will keep the body cooled down during the day as the water you drink on the day in question would only replenish your coolant system and not have any real hydration affect for the actual day in question.

The restroom break problem could have simply been answered by taking it upon yourself to find the neccesary facilities to relive yourself. If you would have been reprimanded for it, then you would have had substaniated cause to file a complaint, but since you didn't then there is no case to be brought before the the court.

It sounds to me like the company is reliable and that at times you were demanding
things like you were the one in charge. I was also a supervisor for the same company in Columbus Ohio for a year and a few months. If I would have been your super, I would have given you a verbal reprimand for wanting the company to provide you with the water when you could have bought a gallon of water for $1.49 and then refilled the gallon of water on a daily basis. If the demands would have continued, I would have informed the company owners or OIC of the problem and would have requested that you be sent home and the problem corrected before your arrival the next day. I would have had to stand your post, but that is part of the job.

Being mature would have also have helped you through the situation more so then being immature and acting like it was the companies responsibility to provide you with the necessities that are not specifically stated in the employment contract.

On the uniform issue, the company has to look out for it's own interest's first, the money you paid for the uniforms is an insurance policy for them. If the shirt or uniform is damaged due to duty related issues, ie, torn during an engagement with a suspect or other activity while in the line of duty, then the company would not make you pay for the shirt or uniform, but if you neglected the uniform and through it around your room when got home, wore it to a party and it came back smelling like dope and had cigarette burn holes all through it then the company has every right to use the money you paid to them to replace the uniform.

I ahd to shell out almost $500.00 for the 2 and half years that I worked for the security companies in Columbus. This included becoming OPOTA certified to carry a sidearm on your person along with uniforms that were purchased by the company and by myself. In all actuality $50.00 really isn't that much to spend.

What you went through is just one process of many ways of weeding out the immature and other types of demeanors not suited to work in the security field.

You must also remember we are still at war with Terrorist's across the world and every precaution needs to be taken to ensure a safe environment when doing a guards duty while not infriging upon the civil liberties of those entrusted to protect.

Now lets take this incident and learn from it. Now let's get out there and keep America safe and secure.

THEY VIOLATED YOUR RIGHTS AND RIPPED YOU OFF SO...

I hope you have the employment agreement in writing or at least a copy of the ad that says in writing that they train you for free.

OK, here's what you do.

GO to your local office of OSHA and report that you were put on a security post without access to potable water or restroom facilities. THAT IS A VIOLATION OF FEDERAL LAW AND THE FEDS NEED MONEY RIGHT NOW SO THEY WILL PROBABLY FINE THEM...

If they took money out of your check for training that was supposed to be free, you need to go to the state agency that handles employment and report this to the Wage and Hour or Labor board people. IN TEXAS, WE WOULD REPORT IT TO OUR PAYDAY LAW PEOPLE. WE WERE HAVING SO MUCH TROUBLE ABOUT SORRY EMPLOYERS RIPPING EMPLOYEES OFF, THERE IS A SPECIAL DIVISION OF THE EMPLOYMENT COMMISSION THAT IS ABLE TO SHUT THEM DOWN AND CONFISCATE THEIR BANK ACCOUNTS, ETC. UNTIL THEY PAY THEIR PEOPLE WHAT IS OWED TO THEM!

(I had to do that with Texaswide Patrol and we had an AUSTIN POLICE OFFICER in charge -- supposedly he was a co-owner!)

YOU ALSO NEED TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE STATE AGENCY THAT LICENSES PRIVATE SECURITY COMPANIES IN OHIO! AND TELL THEM WHAT HAPPENED.

YOU WERE RIPPED OFF BY ANOTHER SORRY PRIVATE SECURITY GUARD CONTRACTING COMPANY OTHERWISE KNOWN AS PRIVATE SECURITY COMPANIES!
FIGHT BACK -- YOU HAVE RIGHTS!
