When I first began with Business Careers I went in to find a job and they ended up offering me a position as a consultant there - I was thrilled! But when I started working here are some things they didn't share upfront and should be a warning to everyone who places their future or the future of their company in it's hands:

First, they hire you at a draw. This means, unless you make the money up quickly with placements, you owe the company money. There are no guarantees and you are upside down and stay that way for SEVERAL months. You are required to come in at 7:30 or 7:45 every morning. In fact, the contract says that if you come in after 7:45 you are considered late. The day ends at 5:00, but if you leave at exactly Five youll get dirty looks. Also, you are permitted to have an hour lunch. . . but you are expected to stay at work for training or to answer the phones. This is not a helping people business, its a telemarketing job, plain and simple.

If you have not made a placement, you still owe the company money but they will keep you around so they can use the information for the senior consultants. And then they fire you. OR they will keep you on until youve made a placement and THEN let you go and the company keeps your money and you are left to find another job. BUT! You have already signed a contract which states that you are not allowed to work with or for any other employment agency with 100 mile radius. And you are not allowed to work with or for any companies that Business Careers HAS worked with, is PRESENTLY working with, or could POTENTIALLY work with. Oh! But they let you know that the only position you are qualified for and can work for once terminated for ANY reason is the job you just left. (ie, if you worked as a Project Manager before coming to Business Careers, the only jobs you are allowed to take are jobs where the title is Project Manager.) Also, if they cannot find your training manuals they will withhold your paycheck.

How do you make money? By making placements. Which means you have to interview people and find jobs for them. Both parties must agree and sign contracts. THEN you make money? NO! then you must inform the company that they should pay their service charge within 10 days of the hire date to get a 5% discount. The service charge is based on 20% of the person's annual income. That seems fair. BUT! Instead of the 5% service charge being taxed to Business Careers end IT COMES OUT OF YOUR POCKET! That's right instead of getting your 30% share of the service charge, you only receive 25%.

Here's how Business Careers Operates:
You must call potential candidates every day. If the candidates have not personally sought out Business Careers we have to chase them down through online posted resumes and so forth. If you cannot get a hold of the potential candidates, you are to use their resumes as 'employer leads.' This means you call the last few companies that the potential candidate has worked for and get them to fill out a 'Job Order.'

Once a candidate comes in for an 'interview' we may already know before hand that we are not able to represent the candidates. In fact, we are instructed to only represent three (if that!) of every ten people we bring in to 'interview.' They call this a 'courtesy.' Well that seems silly, why would you bring in a candidate you know you can't represent? You are instructed to take information from the candidates such as, 'where have you been interviewing?' 'Whom did you speak with at that company?' 'Who is the hiring manager?' Kary York is infamous for pretending to know everyone at every company. She will often say, 'Oh we work with them!' so that you will dish more information.

Those become 'employer leads.' You might be thinking, 'Oh well I will just be tight-lipped about it and not share with them that information.' No no no. If you deny Business Careers ANY information personal or business, they are instructed not to work with you because you are 'uncooperative.'

Ok, so you're one of the three out of ten people who is accepted as a candidate. You are required to come in before AND after each and every interview you are sent out on. 'But that's ridiculous! I live in Federal Way and you're office is in Lynwood and the interview is in Redmond!' 'Too bad, you must not want the job badly enough,' is their stance. The consultants are instructed not to share any information about the company until you are back in their office prepping for the interview.

So you went online and saw all these 'great' jobs. Looks can be very deceiving. The fact is, most of the jobs online or in the papers are the best examples of the kind of jobs Business Careers has. But the catch is, either the jobs aren't available (they just use nice sounding jobs to get more people to come in) or they use a terrible tactic to make the jobs sound more appealing. Here's the trick: Say theres a job where the pay is 35K. But there's mileage reimbursement they'll tack on, and profit sharing, and bonuses, and any training, and cell phone reimbursement and anything else they can drum up like tuition reimbursement or stock options. The way Business Careers advertises this 35K job is 'Great Opportunity with lots of advancement 60K+!'

I mentioned before about 'employer leads,' there are other ways consultants are expected to get this information from you. You know how you filled out an application and provided three references? Well those will all be used to the consultant's advantage. They will call those 'references' not for it's intended use, but to find out who's hiring to get more Job Orders.

With hundreds and hundreds of pages of instruction manuals and many required tapes and videos to watch there is only ONE paragraph about integrity. Business Careers is a terrible company to work with.

Kary York/Business Careers

AUTHOR: Leany - (United States of America)

POSTED: Sunday, July 08, 2012

I am writing this rebuttal on behalf of Kary York.  I will not be critiqing Business Careers, as I feel it is not necessary.  It is true that you work from a draw.  A lot of "sales/recruiting" companies either offer a draw, base salary plus commissions, or 100% commissions.  It's just the way that industry is.  Every new hire is made aware of the company policies and protocol, so they knew this going in to it.  It is not an easy industry either.  You are basically given a phone and some sort of "list" or phone book to start cold calling to find a job order.  It's certainly not an easy job, hence the high turnover in that market.  It's just not a job that everyone is cut out to do.  I feel that Kary provided me with the tools, guidance and encouragement that I needed to be successful, which I was.  I can also speak about Kary because I feel like I know her pretty well though I only worked for her for a little over a year.  She is one of the most honest people I have ever met. Her intentions are always to do the right thing.

If there was something on someones resume that looked promising, we were encouraged to bring them in. The reality is, if someones personality knocks your socks off, sometimes their experience or lack there of is a mute point. We all know of someone who was hired for a position they had NO experience in, but their personality, drive and attitude got them the job. With that being said, I never felt like it was a waste of time to interview as many people as we could.  You just never knew until you ask the layered questions and met the individual in person.

So, my conclusion is this.  No one is perfect, and Kary is no exception.  Neither am I.  We are all human, and responsible for our own destiny.  You have control of your life and know that you get out of it, what you put into it.  So everyone has to look in the mirror and ask themselves, if they gave their all and did the job to the best of their ability.  There's no time to blame others for your indiscrepencies EVER!  My experience and perception with Kary was excellent, because I worked hard!

#2 UPDATE EX-employee responds

Business Careers Lynnwood, not a place to work. Kary York, a horrible person

AUTHOR: Tiff - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, November 23, 2008

Hopefully I have caught you before you have agreed to work with Business Careers and Kary York in Lynnwood, WA. Think hard about your decision to accept or reject a position with Business Careers.
Business Careers, as a company, is one of the least healthy companies you could join. This company is molded after true capitalism at its worst (but don't get me wrong, I love capitalism, its in my blood!). This company exploits employees to such an extent that is beyond belief. The company operates on shameful principles, to name a few;
1. They hire new recruiters weekly, with the only intent being to generate new job orders (job order is where a company agrees to pay a fee for an employee if they hire the employee). After generating these new orders, the new recruiter is generally fired within 3-5 weeks. New jobs orders equals new revenue for Business Careers.
2. New recruiters join believing they will be recruiters in the truest meaning of the term. Rather, you are simply a means to an end, making endless cold calls all day. 100+
3. Business Careers requires recruiters to work up to two hours per night off the clock. You will not be paid for this time, which is a violation of Federal Law. This research entails looking up leads from site like craigslist, monster, etc, for companies that are hiring. Also, finding resumes of potential candidates. Now, don't get me wrong, if you want to succeed in business that is what one must do. However, recruiters are not allowed to use computers during their 8-5 shift (that is, unless you spend your lunch hour to do research on the one and only office computer.
4. Kary York, Manager in Lynnwood (MS). Now she's a piece of work. She is the most shallow, callous, self absorbed, belittling, deceptive, know-it-all, non-compassionate, self centered, and soulless person I have ever encountered. I am ashamed to write this about a fellow human being, but I write this with hope of what foreshadows a potential new recruiter. You will be forced to listen to her never ending stories about her, how good she is, how much money she supposedly makes, her endless stream of guys, and her daily ski stories. If you have read this far, lets make a bet. Did she tell you that she makes $250,000.00 per year to convince you to become a recruiter? Chances are, she did. If you do end up joining Business Careers you will find that almost everyone she interviews she tries to get that person to be a recruiter. It is at least one of the funniest things to see, and at most, something to be ashamed of. If you are intent on being a recruiter with Business Careers, I implore you to contact another office and not work in Lynnwood. Kary York is, without question, the worst person I have EVER encountered in my life.
5. If you are set on becoming a recruiter you should look at other recruiting companies that are more reputable. Check out websites like http://www.seattle.com/employment-agencies/business-directory to help you find other alternatives.

Good luck in your future career search.

Tiff

True

AUTHOR: Dejavu - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, June 19, 2008

True True.........how appropriate my username......Deja vu...... as upon reading this I thought I was back in the Renton office of Business Careers, where only 2 people worked from laptops, as they had been there all their careers.......the others well let's just say there are not enough trees around in the Pacific Northwest for all the wasted paper.

With the economy the way it is maybe there is not that need to pay a staffing firm that much.

Just have to say that I am glad I am gone, I found that it was too much like High School.
