I was solicited by Cambridge Who's Who on 11 July 2008. Helen Webster is my "account manager" who pressured me into purchasing a Platinum Membership for a total cost of $918.95. According to Tricia DeHayes, Senior Representative, Ms. Webster stated that all sales are final. While I understand she assumes this to mean no refunds are give, I was never told that this amount would be nonrefundable, I never signed a contract and I would like my membership terminated and to receive a full refund.

The full amount of $918.95 was withdrawn from my account in less than twenty-fours of my being solicited on 11 July 2008 by Helen Webster (extension 1327). I was told by Tricia DeHayes, on 14 July 2008, that a refund would not be given to me because personalized products had already been made. I have received no such products. Ms. DeHayes also stated that in order to cancel my membership with Cambridge Whos Who I must prove written documentation.

She said that the company was being more than generous in offering to reduce my membership to a 5-year one and refunding me $200. I said by all means to credit my account back the $200 and I would sue them for the remaining $718.95. Ms. DeHayes actually said to me, "No this would resolve the matter. I need verbal confirmation that this would resolve the matter." I said that would absolutely not resolved the matter, I want a full refund. I proceeded to tell Ms. DeHayes that I would pursue my legal rights by reporting Cambridge Who's Who to the Better Business Bureau, FTC, NY State Attorney General and CA State Attorney General. Her response was to tell me I do have consumer rights. I said "I know."

Today I sent a registered letter to Cambridge Who's Who stating that I want a full refund in one lump sum or I will file a small claims case against them. I have hope of winning because a few other people who've posted to this site have won against Cambridge Who's Who.

I can suggest that when whomever you speak with says to wait for customer service to call you back, don't wait. Call the company's number (516) 535-1515 and listen to the recording, it will give you the option of key-ing to a customer service representative.

IF ANYONE HAS WON AGAINST CAMBRIDGE AND HAS ADVICE FOR ME ON HOW I TOO CAN WIN, PLEASE RESPOND TO THIS POSTING!

I will continue to post until this is resolved.

Certify and retain copies of everything

Do send a certified letter to them. This will provide evidence that you officially notified them of your cancellation and request for refund. I've also discovered that in my state and at the national level, there exists a Federal Trade Commission Cooling Off law which I hope will help some people. I've posted my experience, too, and plan to update. Hopefully we all can see some end to this shady company.

Good luck to us all.

Following Your Advice..

I also fell for the scam yesterday, and just finished filing my report with the BBB. A complaint form is in the mail from the NY Attorney General's Office. I feel pretty dumb for falling for it, but nevertheless .. I will try to get my money back! My situation is very similar to yours. I called back not 10 minutes after agreeing to become a member (at the reduced price of $489, no less), and apparently they managed to write my biography and press release in that time! They informed me that the press release is an $800 value (I don't know of anyone who can write a 10-minute press release and say it's worth that much).

I did not send a letter directly to Cambridge Who's Who, but I will if this situation is not resolved. I will have my bank stop the charge, and hopefully they can take care of it. My two biggest issues are:
The "bait and switch" claiming that there was no charge to be included in the listing, and:
The misleading claims about the airline ticket, saying that there were no blackout dates, and "no strings attached".

Good luck to you.. and me!

A hard fight ahead...

Unfortunately, reporting them is getting easy to do but they are now liars and stating wrong info to the BBB and other agencies. I just got my letter back from the BBB and they were told that I never called them back, yeah right. You can call Beth Johnston at ext. 1277 as you will land up talking to her anyways. She is JERK and is a liar too. Fight them to the end, let's shut these buggars down!
