Court ordered X-husband to pay half of my attorney fees. After all over, my attorny (Andrew Barker) informs me that I am liable for the X-husbands debt; since I owed it. This does not seem right to me. I lost over $50,000 from the X filing bankruptcy; so why should I have to carry more of the X's debt. Does anyone know of an answer to this or had a similar circumstance?

It is still your debt

AUTHOR: Carl - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, March 17, 2005

You still owe the money to your attorney. You signed a contract and agreed to pay the your attorney's fees. Some states do have laws that allow you get seek reimbursement from your former spouse based on who has the ability to pay, but you are still responsible to pay the attorney that hired.

You should ask your attorney what efforts, if any, he has made to collect form you ex. If you ex filed for BK to avoid paying his half of your fees, you should ask you attorney to research whether the bankruptcy discharged this debt.
