My husband, Marvin, has Alzheimer's disease. This is clearly obvious to anyone dealing with him. Mr. Stollery, owner of Canal Town Electric was doing business across the street @ the home of his aunt, Laurie Stollery. Mr. husband asked him to come over and put a florescent light bulb in one of our ceiling fixtures. After looking at the fixture, he quoted $100 and indicated that we were lucky that the house did not burn down--which was an exaggeration--which clearly upset my husband.

When the job was finished, he charged $200 which my husband paid by check on an account that he was not authorized to use--his name was not on the check--only my name is on the checking account. My husband called me @ work and told me. I called Mr. Stollery and left a message for him to call me immediately--he did not.

When we called him that evening @ 5:30 p.m. and asked that the check be held until there were funds in the account, he said he would hold the check until the 1st of February. The next day @ 6:30 a.m. when checking the account on line, I found that he had already cashed the check.

There are several problems--first of all he had to realize that he was dealing with someone who did not have complete metal capabilities. Secondly, he quoted $100, charged $200...and thirdly he lied when he said he would hold the check--as he well knew, he had already cashed and illegal check. I also find it very unprofessional for him to alarm my 78 year old husband by telling him our home could have burned down. The fixture in question had been installed in 1996 by a reputable electrician who did all new wiring, etc, in our home when we had a terrible house fire.

Quoted services

AUTHOR: Alan - (U.S.A.)

In response to Patricia in Rochester New York who claimed we over charged for quoted services....the only things true in this evaluation is that her husband apparently has Alzheimer's and he did come across the street to my aunt's house to request our services.

Her husband was completely lucid in this dialogue and there was no way we knew he was ill. If so ill, why was he out and left alone? There was never a mention of a fire hazard to him and he was the one who told me they had a kitchen fire recently. They had two problems and neither was quoted. One was a fixture in their laundry had failed and another fixture in their family room also failed. I told her husband that it was cheaper to replace an older 4 lamp fixture than to replace and we would replace ballast and lamps in the other. There never was a quote of any sort as these were family friends. The laundry fixture may have been put in by a professional in 1996 but that makes it 12 years old and obsolete technology as well. Ballasts only have a life span of about 12-14 years.

We told him we would be back across the street in a few days and would do it then.

We went to the local Home depot and got a lensed 4 lamp fluorescent fixture and 4 new lamps, one ballast and 2 lamps for the repaired fixture. Parts alone, which I have the receipt for were $11o and we charged them all of $85 for labor to get the parts and install them. I had another electrician with we and it took 2 man hours alone for the repairs and replacements. We charge $120 per hour plus travel for similar repairs with 2 electricians. We did them a favor.

I had no idea he couldn't sign for a check and that he was ill. This event has been settled with my version at the BBB and at the State consumer level.
