My mother who has sever dementia had a very large amount of money at chase bank. The personal banker targeted her for hundreds of dollars in fees. By the time I got there to help her she had lost thousands . 12 dollar fees for spending her own money. Over and over. she was talked into having all these accounts then they would switch money around and charge fees. My poor mother they stole her blind.

Advice for Chris

AUTHOR: commoncents2000 - (United States of America)

POSTED: Sunday, December 11, 2011

Chris,  I intend for this to be serious advice from a banker of 23 years.  Banks send statements every month - if being concerned about your mother's dementia was top priority, her daily activity should have been monitored by someone willing to accept the responsibility.  This involves making sure her bills are paid, as well as making sure she doesn't pay them twice or is being taken advantage of financially.

Sure, I understand the frustration from bank fees - I see it first hand frequently.  If someone brings me their recent statement inquiring about the fees, I have some wiggle room to sit down and work something out.  However, someone coming in - throwing  personal accusations - with several months worth of statements in their hands informing us that they've been aware that their mother has had dementia for months has no room to throw stones.  Even with clients I have known for years - there is NO way I can monitor their accounts individually on a daily - or even weekly basis.  You lost credibility with me personally when you brought up that the fees accrued over months.  My sympathies lie with the individuals who accrue numerous fees within a statement period and are unaware until they they see it on their recent account activity.  It is apparent that the fact that she utilized overdraft protection so often actually saved her 3 - 4 times the fees she would have been charged.

Now that some of the fees have been recovered and your mother seems to be receiving the appropriate medical care - I hope this lesson encourages you to take the initiative to do what is right for your mom.

Have you even started the process of being named guardian???

I'll throw in with Robert's take W-A-Y before any of your posts.

AUTHOR: Robert - (USA)

POSTED: Sunday, December 11, 2011

If you chose to believe whatever this admitted LIAR posts here, that's your choice.  I chose to NOT believe his 3 BS postings.

Let me spell it out for you.  Chris is a LIAR.  He made 3 posts about banks and I'm calling a liar a liar.  I've have made no remarks about his mother or her alleged condition.  My remarks are about Chris being a liar and only about Chris being a liar.  This diluted dullard actually thought that someone would believe his BS about having a PhD.  LOL!  Perhaps in his circle of uneducated friends he might appear as someone who "has an edgumication and rites real good" [sic] but to anyone with a High School or better education, his story falls like a house of cards.

For your continuing education, here are the links to his other BS reports:

If you want to toss stones, "Gods love" [sic], that's find but perhaps you should change your ID-your hypocrisy stinks.

I will always call out a liar as a liar.  If that makes me a "meaney" so be it.  As far as I'm concerned, that falls under the heading of "too bad."

You must be losing track of your lies.  First it was a PhD.  That changed to 2 Master Degrees plus one year of law school.  Now it's changed to 3 degrees!  LMAO!

Ya know, if you tell the truth, you don't have to remember what you typed.

Have you asked your professional and rich relatives to spot you for some night classes yet?  I suggest starting with English 101 at your nearest community college.

If you are referring to my comments regarding your mother's account issues with Chase I can assure you no court would tell me to sit down and shut up.  In fact, I would be the one of the four people allowed to DO the talking.  My advice was meant to give you an explanation and offer a glimpse into in the world of banking.  Your complaint seemed to me to demonstrate someone who didn't know the facts as they pertain to what happens when one utilizes overdraft protection.  In addition, not only did you not understand the facts but you jumped to a conclusion (of which you had zero proof) and accused someone of a criminal act...two criminal acts.  I would think it would be of some relief to realize your mother's unfortunate condition ( and I am sympathetic to your mother's situation) contributed to the problem with her account and NOT a bank employee abusing an elderly woman nor embezzling funds from her account.  Have a Merry Christmas.

take money from savings and put it into her checking. about once a month far to little far tolate. and yes as I said before the personal banker gave my mom her own personal home phone number. You need two doctors to agree to incapacitation,I was there by then.I had been in oklahoma. They were not as worried once i was there. her dementia was not a slow gradual process it was part on normal pressure hydrocosis. her state ment come monthly. It was caught and stopped. If the personal banker had merely put a substainal amount in numerous fees would have been avoided. That of course would have ruined all thefun of taking advantage of some poor befuddle lady with serious medical problems.plus not nearly as profitable.

Not Commpletely

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, December 05, 2011
Guardianships are not purchased at walmart and do take months and even then are not easy to get
-
Actually depending on the exact situation generally take between 1-2 months, but if there is an immediate need you can generally get an "emergency guardianship" in a couple of days that would be in effect while you are seeking a permanent one.   As for them being easy to get.  The courts require the person to be evaluated by medical professionals(generally both physical and mental).  If they agree that there is a need and unless there are extreme circumstances the courts would generally assign a guardian.

Wither a person gets an offical commission for ripping people off. i doubt even chase would do that. More like you get to keep your job.
- Okay enough with the conspiracy theories.  It sounds like she had Overdraft protection linked to her savings account.  This is something that EVERY bank offers, and it requires the account holder to agree to it.  Whether or not she understood what she was signing is another matter.  However, once she agrees to it this is in the system and is done AUTOMATICALLY.   I seriously doubt her "personal banker" even knew it was going on let alone was the one physically transferring funds.  Unless your mom had millions in her savings account the "personal banker" has better things to do with their day.  But if they really wanted to take advantage of your mom they could just not have linked the accounts and had her be charged about $35 per transaction rather than the $10-$12 per day.

Based on your logic if the Overdraft fee that she was charged allowed them to keep their job, I imagine that the $35 per transaction fee would have gotten them a Bank Manager position.

Funny I have not ever complained about any other banks

- Well have you constantly overdrafted at other banks?  You may be shocked to hear that EVERY bank has pretty much the same policies.

You have no knowledge of the facts and would be asked to sit down and shut up. Guardianships are not purchased at walmart and do take months and even then are not easy to get. As I said the personal banker was trusted for some time. I guess you live in candy land where everyone is honest .Wither a person gets an offical commission for ripping people off. i doubt even chase would do that. More like you get to keep your job. Wrong.

AUTHOR: Mia - (USA)

POSTED: Sunday, December 04, 2011

So sorry to read about your mother's illness.  It is terrible to suddenly become one's own mother's, "parent."  However, with regard to the management of her checking account it sounds as if you were not fully informed as to what the policies and procedures are. And since she is your mother, one would expect her finances to be managed by you or another family member in the event of her incapacitation.  Everyone, no matter the age, should have someone named as having a Power of Attorney.  Even young people become sick and incapacitated, this is not something reserved for the older generations.  What I am about to explain is specific to Chase, although most large banks operate in the same general manner.  First of all, you stated that your mother was writing checks or drawing on a checking account when there where no funds in that account.  That is most definitely a problem but not one anyone can control except for the account owner.  You also mentioned, "they would switch money around and charge fees," what you later explained sounds like when funds were drawn against her checking account and there wasn't enough to cover the check or debit, the bank utilized the overdraft protection your mom set up which sounds like it was against a savings account.  Overdraft protection is exactly what it sounds like...if your account is going to be overdrawn the bank will transfer funds from an account the client sets up as the back up account.  This is for emergency purposes only and not to be used as some kind of automatic transfer service. Chase's rules and regulations clearly state there is a, "per day, charge for this service.  So if there is one overdraft protection transfer done on Monday, there is a fee.  If there are three overdraft protection transfers on Tuesday, there is ONE fee.  The same fee ($10 or $12 a day, depending on which state you live in.)  After each and every day an ODP transfer is made a computer sends out a letter detailing the transfer and fee..  These transfers are also detailed on both the checking and savings account statements.  No one stole anything the bank simply paid the items in the manner she requested.  If your mother was incapable of reading her own mail, or you didn't bother to read it before things got really out of hand what is Chase or any bank supposed to do?  If your mother didn't have an overdraft protection account set up (in other words, kept the savings account not linked to the checking for ODP transfers) and there were not enough funds in the checking account the bank would have either paid some of the items and overdrawn the account (up to a certain point) or refused the item (bounced back the check or debit) and charged fees of $34 dollars for each occurrence and left the savings account untouched.  In that case her lights could have been turned off, her mortgage or insurance not paid or any other number of things could have happened.   No one is playing three card Money (or a shell game) with your Mom's money.  The bank did what your mom at some point asked them to do, which was cover any overdrafts with her savings account.  The bankers at the branches do not get paid any type of commission when a client gets charged a fee.  The bank makes money, sure, but the only way a banker gets money is when an account is opened and sustained for over 60 days.  This, "winking" nonsense probably had more to do your accusations than a conspiracy against your ailing mom. Charges of, "elder abuse " are taken very seriously.  Most banks have one department set up to deal with this kind of problem.  The lesson for you is to grow up.  Your mom needs you right now to step up and help her take care of these things.  Go to the bank with your mom and have yourself added as a signer and as that a duplicate copy of the statements be sent to you.  Since you found this website you know how to use a computer, go online to Chase's website and once you are a signer, monitor her accounts daily.  You can set up alerts to your email or cell phone if an overdraft is pending.  Stop blaming Chase, stop blaming the bankers and their winks.  Good luck.

her sever dementia lasted 9 months. still bad. but better. resulted from normal pressure hydroclus. mri and other scans revealed her condition as normal aging. During that time her person banker would transfer money from savings tochecking to cover checks. 12 dollar each time. every purchase resulted in a 12 fee. with the business [rentals] she owned plus personal accounts this was around 300 per month for 6-7 months. plus any other charge they could come up with. also family members are not experts old age is often blamed for forgetfulness and loss of capacity. it this case normal pressure hydroclosis. The bank was merciless in there fees and the banker girl even winked at another employee when they were talking to her. like haha,I could go on but to what point. we have all seen it for our selves how banks behave. tricking people into fees.

If your mother truly has severe dementia, why hasn't she been assigned a guardian or conservator to watch over her? I'm doing this now for my boyfriend, who has a terminal illness and very greedy children. They were stealing thousands out of his bank accounts until I stepped in.

Please see that she gets some help. Our elders should not be treated this way!!

I am sorry about your mother as I am familiar with how dementia can affect a family.   I am also not saying that Chase did or did not do something wrong, but it seems as if there is some details missing.

If she was suffering from severe dementia, does anyone monitor her accounts?  If so perhaps that person is as much to blame because they should have caught this before it got to "thousands" of dollars.  If there is not anyone monitoring her account, the question of course is why not?

Also exactly what makes up this "thousands" in fees an how long has it been going on.
