Chrysler FCA decided to save money by eliminating paychecks and making people either go with direct deposit, or a Citi Prepaid Card.  The card is supposed to work as either a debit card or a credit card.  I've had the thing for three months.  Last month, I had waited for 30 minutes in a line at Costco for gasoline.  I found the card would not work as either a credit card or debit card at Costco.  The next day, I tried using it as a debit card to make a bank deposit.  Citicard rejected again, this time by Bank of America.

I called Citi's "customer service".  The man speaking in broken English with a foreign accent said that the problem "couldn't be with the card" because he had no record showing of the card being rejected.  Similarly, today, I tried making a software download purchase with the card.  Rejected again.  Called Citi's "customer service" again.  Same BS.  The lady with the foreign accent speaking in broken English claimed the problem couldn't have been with the card, because (once again)  they showed no record on their system of the card being rejected.  Citi "customer service" is only good for problem denial.  Citi Prepaid Card is unreliable, and apparently their account tracking software is also useless.

Further Quirks Of The Citicard You Should

AUTHOR: Kurt - (United States)

POSTED: Tuesday, February 06, 2018

Hi Simon,

You have my sympathy.  While direct deposit is the only other option left to us, it can only be the least evil of the two, as the Citi Card sucks.

From all the consumer websites I've looked at since discovering how pathetic the Prepaid card performs, all of them have given Citibank one out of five star ratings.

The least pathetic way to use the card is the "Pre-check" option.  You get the impression from Citi literature that this might be an easy transaction you could complete via an automated telephone system.  (The "how to use a pre-check" instructions even say "enter desired dollar amout of withdrawl") Not so. When you phone the number for what you expect to be an automated system, you find yourself waiting for a foreign "service agent", and giving them all the information personally to activate a "Pre-check".

One of the options at their website is "bank transfer".  It's shortcomings are only allowing you to specify one bank and one account - and also, you can not transfer a portion of the card amount to your bank account.  100% is the only option.

Thanks for your response, and good luck.  Hope I've been some help.

I'm hearing the same thing.

I too have that card from FCA and had not used it yet, but I'm hearing this from a few more people that has this wirecard. From what I heard is that there is a $1,500 limit and if you try to use it or go to the bank to get your money out, you will get denied and charged for the service. Then you have to call service to up the limit to which you can pull YOUR money from. So the way it works is that once you did all that, the bank will have to pull the money from the wirecard and into your real bank account and only then you can get the cash. They want us to have this hassle to get us to go with auto deposit. YES, ALL BS!. Good luck Kurt, I know I'll need it too!

Thank you for the bleeding obvious.

I was not attempting to use the card as a credit card.  I was attempting to access the funds on the card in all three rejection instances.

When I have over $3000 on a debit card (as was the case in all three rejection instances), it should be able to handle a gasoline purchase, a bank deposit for under that amount, and an online purchase for $40.  Providing the card is not dysfunctional, which was obviously the case.

The prepaid card you have is a debit card. It is not a credit card. The differences between them are ..

  1. For a debit card, you need to have enough money in your account before purchase; whereas, you don't need any money in a credit card account but must be current (either paid minimum with balance or has no balance).
  2. For a debit card, it may be able to charge back (cancel a payment) but unlikely. If you could charge back, it would take sometimes for the money to go back into your account. For credit card you have much better successful chance to charge back. Also, usually the charge back would be resolved before your billing cycle; thus, no need to pay money up front and then wait for the account balance adjustment.
