They sent an award letter from 'Guardian Financial Claim Services, 525 North Belt, Ste 172, Houston, TX 77060 telling me that I had one $100,000 as the 3rd Grand Prize Winner in a National Geographic sweepstakes.

Enclosed was a check for $3,085.00 to cover the insurance, handling, duty and taxes. I was instructed to call their number1-450-369-0492 with my 'reference number' to release my winnings.

Fortunately, I could tell this was fraud. Confirmed that the check was fraudulent BEFORE attempting to cash it. Normally what these schemes do is get you to deposit the check in your bank and then wire them the fees that they gave you. By the time you find out that the check isn't good, you are now on the hook for the funds. Your bank is not responsible for cashing the check. You are.
