About three days ago, I received a collect phone call from a friend who is in the county jail in Lee City, Kentucky (even though my local phone company was supposed to have a block on my phone prohibiting such calls). She's a very good friend, so I accepted the call. I was not given any warning about their outrageous charges, simply press 1 to accept the call. Today, an 800 number showed up on my cell phone. I did not answer it. Later in the day, I received a recorded message on my home phone telling me that since I had accepted a collect call from a correctional facility, I would now be charged a "recurring monthly service charge" from this company!! I immediately called them back and talked to some clown named Jerry. He asked me for my name, home phone number, address, and social security number. I refused to give it to him, and he said he could not "verify my account" unless I gave it to him. I told him if he told me what they had on record, I would verify it, but I would not volunteer the information for him. That's stupid! I asked for a supervisor, he refused. I hung up, called back and got yet another rude and stupid employee of their's named Kendia. Again, I was refused a supervisor's attention. I called my local phone company and was told that if I don't pay their bill, my long distance service could also be blocked. CBS also would not tell me how much this "recurring monthly service fee" would be. I told them I do not have an account with them and if they try to bill be any kind of monthly fee, I will sue them. Then tonight, I got another call on my cell phone from their 800 number. Cingular tells me that collect calls cannot be made to cell phones and they cannot charge my cell phone ANY kind of charges. I plan to report them to the BBB and the Attorney General tomorrow. I will not be paying them one cent! Something needs to be done about these clowns! They should not be allowed to conduct such immoral business practices anywhere in the United States.
By the way, my friend is in jail until tomorrow for failure to appear on a traffic violation. I didn't even do anything wrong and I'm the one being punished! This is total bull! I sent a nasty-gram to CBS.....I doubt I'll get a reply. They're CHICKENS!!! I told them where they could go!

Listen to the options when they call.

When you receive a collect call from a correctional facility, listen to ALL options given by the automated system before you press the button to accept the call (if you have never received a collect call from that location before). They usually will say, after your option to accept, "To hear charges incurred for this call, press _." "To block calls from this facility, press _." Your cell phone provider is correct though; collect call billing is typically 3rd party, and cell phones do not allow for collect calls to be billed to the number. Sounds like Correctional Billing Services may be out the money---they obviously allowed a call to go through on a number that was never authorized to receive collect calls.

Unless your friend spends more time in jail than at work-perhaps you may consider letting THEM pay the bill.Just a thought.....
