I received a bill today from Correctional Billing Services a division of Evercom and T-NEX telecommunications. My brother spent a few weeks in jail and asked me to set up a pre-paid account with my credit card so he could call his wife. The problem is that there is an extended "allowance" over the pre-paid amount. Who receives the bill for this "allowance"? Who do they say is responsible for this "allowance"? Me. The account is his own but since I gave my credit card info I am now responsible. Pre-paid is pre-paid. Is Visa going to give you $100 on a pre-paid $50 card? So, this company sticks it to the innocent families to pay. Beware! They are scammers!!!! Please let me know if you also have been scammed. I would like to create a case against the real criminals.

Interesting Points

IF what the lady says is true, your brother had a warning that he was going over the limit you had placed on the account, yet he kept talking. How come he or his wife couldn't fit the bill? It does kind of suck that you did put a limit on the account yet they allowed him to go over it. One thing I read was to go to one of those check cashing places and get a pre-paid credit card and put a certain amount of money on the card. That way when the dollars ran out, the time ran out. They can't collect on anything over what's on the card cause there's nothing there. I'd contest it with my credit card company. Tell them that you authorized only the $50 yet THEY allowed the $100, not you. If enough people fight it and they don't get paid, they'll stop the practice. Keep in mind your brother will be on their "list" and might lose his phone priviledges the next time he's in jail. My grandaughter's baby's daddy is in jail on capital murder charges and he calls my office and has ME set up a three way call to either his mother or my granddaughter cause I'm the only one who pays MY bills and they have put blocks from the jail on their phones. At $4 a minute, I limit him to no more then 5 minutes every two weeks. So I'm use to dealing with CBS and I sure wouldn't give them a credit card number. When he calls, I can either accept or decline the calls and before you accept a call you can get an explanation and accounting of prices.

Correctional Billing services will not return my money.

I prepaid on an account with correctional billing services. i have since closed the account. Every time that I call, they tell me that they are sendining the money, or it has to go in for approval, or Now, I need to fax them a copy of my phone bill to prove that it is my account! They just don't want to refund my money.

I know this company, but can't say anything bad about them

AUTHOR: Strawberrygurl - (U.S.A.)

I am quite familiar with this company through the law firm I work for and criminal clients represented by us. I have used them when talking to clients in jails, as have friends and family members of these clients, and no one has ever had any problems with them. Of course, we would all like it if the costs were less expensive (!), but no one I know has ever been scammed by this company.

Everyone I know who has used the prepaid time option with this company has received warnings when going over the prepaid time, and then were cut off until the overage charges were taken care of. But yes, there is an allowance, sort of like how your credit card company may allow you to go over the limit but charges you for it. Even without prepaid time, the company still will not allow the bill go over a certain amount before cutting the time off until paid - I know people this has happened to.

You wouldn't know about the warnings unless you were the one on the phone that your brother was calling. They break in during calls with verbal recorded warnings about the time. And when it gets to the point that they actually cut you off, if the inmate still tries to call, the person on the receiving end of the call gets a recorded message about paying the bill before they will allow any more calls.

I've had nothing but good experiences with this company, unlike other correctional billing companies I've used in the past through my job.

Since you did your brother a big favor that you didn't have to do, he should be willing to reimburse you for the costs. He did use the talk time, after all - it's not a situation where they are charging for minutes not used.
