On 11/19/2007, I purchased a Dell Inspiron 531s, AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ processor from Dell online (dell.com). The product information on the dell.com web site indicated that the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ processor for the machine that I ordered had 2MB of processor memory (L2 cache) (link below).

http://www.dell.com/content/learnmore/learnmore.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~id=hmc_cpu_inspndt_amd&~mode=popup&~series=inspn&~tab=other

When placing the order online, only one option existed when selecting the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ processor, which I believed was the processor with 2MB of cache memory. However, the system that I received had an Athlon processor with an L2 Cache of only 1MB (512MB for each core) as reported in the BIOS. I understand from the AMD website (link below) that several different Athlon 64X2 4000+ processor models exist with different L2 cache memory (link below).

http://products.amd.com/en-us/DesktopCPUResult.aspx?f1=AMD+Athlon%e2%84%a2+64+X2+Dual-Core&f2=4000%2b&f3=&f4=&f5=AM2&f6=&f7=&f8=&f9=2000&

However, only one order option existed when selecting the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ processor on the dell.com site.
I appears that my system was built with the 1MB (total) L2 Cache Athlon 4000+ processor instead of the 2MB (total). On 1/14/2008, I noticed that the processor in my system had 1MB of L2 Cache instead of 2MB and I contacted Dell Customer Service on several occasions. However, they refuse to replace the processor with the correct processor that was advertised and ordered. They also refused to provide a credit for the price difference between the processor that I received and the processor that I ordered. The Processor with L2 Cache memory of 2MB that was advertised on the Dell web site is what I used to based my purchase decision on prior to placing an order with Dell. I have screen prints of the advertisement of the different processor options and of the processor I selected when placing my order if necessary. ADDITIONAL DETAILS: Account Number: CP655F1 Order Number: 929694134. The last Dell Customer Service representative I spoke with was Mark Smith 800 624-9897 x7239429 on 2/1/08.

This issue arose as a result of false or deceptive advertising on the Dell web site. I made a purchasing decision based on the product information on the Dell site. However, instead of Dell taking responsibility for their error, I am being asked to pay the penalty by either accepting the system that I have with the CPU with less memory. This is not the customer service response that I would expect from Dell and not the customer service response that would encourage me to be a promoter of Dell products and services in the future. BUYER BEWARE!
