Took my 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee in for a small oil leak. Was told it was the power steering pump that needed to be replaced and although the pump was under warranty all of the power steering pressure line would have to be replaced also which did not come under warranty. My comment to the service writter was, how could all of this be leaking when only one small drop of oil appeared on my garage floor?

It took 4 days to repair the vehicle and when I was called up to be advised that my vehicle was readt this same service adviser said to me, Oh by the way we also found a crack in your power steering reservoir and had to change that unit also which is not under warranty.

When I arrived at the dealership to pick up my vehicle I asked to see and have all of the parts that had to be replaced. This service writter refused to give me, or even let me see 2 of the 3 parts replaced in the power steering and the only part that he would give me is the power steering resevior which I believe was the problem all along.

I thought it was consumer law that they had to show you or even give you all the parts that they said they replaced. He said the pump was under warranty and not my concern or cost but I responded that I was charged for the 3 hoses replaced that connected to that pump at a cost of $ 294.89

Desert Jeep Las Vegas NV

AUTHOR: Bill - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, February 09, 2007

I followed the suggestions of many of you and sent a detailed letter to Daimler Chrysler with a copy to the service manager of Desert Jeep in Las Vegas expressing exaxctly what I think had happened with the many power steering leaks they claimed I had. Today I received a call from the Desert Jeep Service Manager appoligizing for the almost $200 mistake. According to her (yes the service mgr. is a woman) the mechanic who worked on my vehicle broke the resevoir while making the repairs on the pump and so the story goes that the communication between the service writter and the mechanic got confused and the part and labor for the reservoir got added to the invoice. I guess this could happen BUT...had it not been for the letter I wrote nothing more would have been said or done and I would have benn out this money. This has certainly been a lesson to me to always ask for the parts, If it doesent' sound right then ask questions and if that not working take the time to write anybody and everybody concerned in this process. The service mgr. said she called everybody in the office that worked on my vehicle which is how she got to the bottom of this and is mailing me a refund check today. Thanks to all who replied.

Chrysler pumps usualy have the reservoir bolted to the pump back

AUTHOR: Jim - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, February 09, 2007

Chrysler pumps usualy have the reservoir bolted directly to the pump back, a big "O" ring seals it, it's low pressure or no pressure.

Pump reservoir

AUTHOR: Edward - (U.S.A.)

I am not sure about your vehicle, but most newer vehicles such as yours has a remotereservoir. They are usually mounted on the inside fender, away from the power steering pump. If that is what you have, then it would feed the fluid by gravity. If the reservoir has been replaced as they claim, you should see a brand new one in its place, along with old fluid around or under where the old reservoir was. Power steering pressure hoses's do have tremendous pressure in it. Most hoses are made from metal tubing and high pressure hose. The rubber pressure part is so that the motor can have some movement without breaking the metal part of the line. Albeit, that more return lines are made of metal and pressure line also, they have much less pressure and if they break they can be usually replaced with a just a piece of power steering hose and some clamps. Most pressure lines that screw into the power steering pump also have a o-ring seal that will go bad. The dealer will also charge a fairly high labor rate. The final kicker is that you can pay 2 or 3 times for a part at the dealer than at a good parts store..

There's no such thing as a core charge on hoses

AUTHOR: Jim - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, February 08, 2007

You've been screwed hoses that leak spray a LOT of oil, not a drop or two, also stating that the pump is warranty, but not the housing is a flat lie.
call Chrysler Corporate, state exactly what happened, and those thieves will be in huge trouble. hang onto your receipt, it shows exactly what parts were replaced, and the part numbers of all parts, it's very valuable as evidence.

Nope

They only have to provide you with the old parts if you requested them when the repair order was written up. If you want something that has a "core" charge, you will be required to pay that "core" charge.
