When you call to activate service they do not tell you, that you are signing up for 2 years and there is a $300-400 early disconnect fee. When the technician installs the equipment, you think you are signing for the equipment installed, but you are putting your signature on the 2 year contract. They do not tell you any of this. If you have to disconnect before the 2 years, then you are told you signed the contract and there is absolutely no way around it. They never ever wave the fee, that is company policy. This is blatant false advertising practices. When you try and talk to them, all you get is "you should have been told at sign up about the contract, if you were not then the technician should have told you. Well what do you do when neither one of them told you about it?

Reading the very very fine print of DirectTV

AUTHOR: Christi - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, July 16, 2009

I too recently signed a contract for Direct TV - Forgetting that "small print" is the standard business practice of Direct TV.

1. The discount must be applied for.
2. The contract was for 2 years, and yes you CAN cancel at anytime for a huge fee for services you have never received.
3. The "free" transmitters are free but the service is not that's $5 extra a month.
4. According to a conversation with a Direct TV employee. Direct TV does not know much about the companies installing their service, and really they don't care. Direct is VERY aware that the 3rd party vendors lie and misrepresnt their product but really what is a HUGE company suppose to do? Monitor their service vendors?

Which brings me to this. DirectTV KNOWS this is a problem, and bets on a dishonest person to gain your trust, and to vaugely go over the contract with you, while you sign. Which makes it DirectTV's responsiblity as well as the abused customer. The contrat is a cheap fruad, and I think all of us should sue.

You can tell by the rather nasty tone of the Direct TV employees. Read the contract because Direct is a big company...we don't care because we don't have to.

Perhaps we are just foolish old people. Welcome in the new era. There is no handshake to honor, no reputation to protect, no your word is your bond. There are only companies who believe in ripping you off because you were dumb enough to believe the word of another human being that Direct employed because YOU would trust the lying creep to be honest about what you were signing.

Lets get an attorney.

Early Termination Fee for Direct TV contract...

AUTHOR: Gripey Pants - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, June 01, 2009

Here's the scoop on your early termination fee.

First, it is there so that you are locked in to a contract with them and they can say they have "x" customers and project the next year worth of customers.

It is not there so that they can no honor their contract. If you have issues with Direct TV such as billing or service, they will waive it. If you simply say you don't want it anymore, then you pay the fee.

Things that would make it so they can't honor their portion of the contract include, but are not limited to, stations promised and charged for, but not delivered; less than 99.9% signal reliability (uptime); misleading statements made when you signed up for service etc..

I always keep very good notes. Also don't speak to a customer service rep when you call. Talk to a manager. If you manager can't solve your problem, talk to customer retention.

Likely at some point they will offer you something to compensate you.

My friend has had them for 10 years and I recently switched after being with Comcast for over 10 years. She has always had great luck with Direct TV being willing to work with you and I have had the same over an issue of what was told to me when I started my service.

Hope it helps!

It is no secret that direct tv can be unorganized-we are a massive corporation with many different departments, but so is any other big corporation INCLUDING dish network which has the same complaints on this site if you want to check them out. The truth is in the real world these corporations have policies and can get away with sticking to them-if we did not then people could and would take advantage. What it comes down to is everything is disclosed in the contract also available on direct tv.com-any grown up would read what they agree to and if they did not read take responsability for their mistake, you cant win any other way-so learn your lesson and read before you sign. If direct tv let everyone off the hook because they said "I was told different" or any other lame excuse, the consumer would walk all over us. I mean seriosously think about it, if you dont listen to reason then go ahead complain, scream, cry, jump up and down-no matter what you do in the end you will pay up just like anything else you sign up for-SO GROW UP, take responsability. It is not a rip off, you just dont have a full grip on how the real world works, dont worry-you'll learn some day :)

WRONG!!

hey sales rep for Direct TV ppl wouldn't have to worry about reading the contract if you reps were NOT lying to ppl to begin with you find every excuse u can to rip people off and stick with a charge because of crappy service or fraud charges that you do NOT or should not have to pay and as far as that contract goes when i signed up i was told that i'd get the FIRST month free to try it out what's your excuse on that? because i NEVER got it they claimed u had to have the plus plan not the premium NOONE told me this that was LIE #1 when i ordered the remotes i was assured that the $6 charge each month covered not by ONE but THREE reps i told them if it was not covered i'd not activate the other receivers and leave it at the 2 new ones but they ALL assured me that lost remotes WERE covered under the protection plan to find they charged me $30 for the 2 LIE #3 they tell me there's a $200 cancellation fee when i first ordered and again when i disconnected cause of all these charges they were throwing at me my bill was supposed to have been $49.99 a month with taxes i would guess about $60-$65 i was paying $150 a month so don't give me that crap about it being OUR fault it's Direct TV's fault for LYING (and then calling it a mistake) and not doing a THING about it they do everything they can to rip you off they make u sign a contract regardless if you have actual service or not and THEN if u cancel cause u have never had service they charge u out the butt for it

ANOTHER I DID NOT KNOW BS REPORT - NEVER SIGN SOMETHING YOU HAVE NOT READ

AUTHOR: Laurie - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, April 09, 2009

Claiming they never told me - the FACT IS YOU SIGNED THE CONTRACT WITHOUT READING IT. That is not DirecTv's fault.

YOU AND ONLY YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR PROTECTING YOURSELF! You failed to do that!

So many reports about ripoffs that could have been avoided simply because some fool signed the contract without reading it. Or agreed to terms and conditions on websites without reading them.

FACT IS YOUR ARE RESPONSIBLE !

Sharon after reading your statement your right... they flat out lie to you and tell you 1 thing then do something totally different here is my story and what they did to me

When i first called the lady told me i'd have to pay $19.95 for the install which was fine no problem she tells me that IF i cancel before i think it was 18 months at that time i can't remember that would be a $200 cancellation fee but she said the first month would be free to try it out this all sounded OK to me so i signed up with the biggest pkg i figured hey it's free for the first month and i don't have to pay for 2 months of service like i would have had too any other time so i payed the $19.95 the guy came out to install like the next day or day after that i can't remember

2-3 weeks later i received a bill for $150 which was prorated for 1 month and charged the full next months payment so i called up and talked to a guy that THEN told me in order to get the first month free you had to have the plus plan which was $49.99 I tell this guy that nobody told me that the lady i had talked too just said it was the first month free so he says that he will lower it down to that plan and give me a $90 credit which he did now i'm supposed to get the FIRST month free (with an exception of the higher channels for 2-3 weeks) i ask him if i pay $100 on the first of the next month would that cover it he assures me it would so i pay the $100 on the 1st on the 3rd or 4th i get another bill for $142 (i thought that guy said that $100 would cover it?) so the next month i pay another $100 2 days later i get the bill it's now $150 (with a $5 late fee which i had expected that late fee anyway) what i don't get is the fact that if i'm on the $49.99 plan taxes were usually like $3 on satellite tax in my state if i remember correctly which i don't think DirectTV offered satellite tax at that time... anyway how can the bill keep going up and not down? even with the $5 late fee it should have been coming down considering i was on the $50 plan

now my aunt is a diabetic and didn't really like living by herself plus the house that we lived in at that time was extremely cold so for the winter i had moved in with my aunt i had 2 other receivers that i had used yrs ago with them but i had canceled cause they had never gotten the locals and Dish Network did so i asked that they install those and since i had the $5 a month fee in case anything tears up which i thought i was covered under lost items as well i asked the guys there several times are they covered for lost items they assure me they are so i get 2 remotes the next month i pay another $100 just to find out that they charged me $30 when my bill came out for the 2 remotes and charged me $10 for downgrading to the plus from the premium cause they hadn't charged me that when they were supposed to have (and they shouldn't have charged me that cause the guy said he'd do it so i could get my free month which i obviously never got)

when i call up and speak to a representative the guy tells me that lost items are NOT covered i tell him that the 2 guys i spoke with told me they were and he'd not refund the charges so i got fed up and cancelled that $5 a month plan since it wasn't what i was told it was and they charged me yet another $10 for downgrading after all was said and done at the end of that month i paid another $100 and by this time i was fed up and called to cancel completely the lady tells me there is a $200 cancellation fee and i was FINE with paying that $200 cancellation fee so i wouldn't have to deal with them anymore i pay the $96 that i owed before canceling and sent the stuff back including the 2 remotes and demanded they refund me for them about a week or so later i get a letter in the mail from a collections agency saying that i owe Direct tv $220 (was $250 BEFORE the $30 credit for the 2 remotes)

I Call up DirectTV and they tell me that there is a $250 cancellation fee and i told her that both the ladies i talked too (the one when i signed up and the one when i cancelled) said $200 cancellation fee and they gave me a credit for $30 for the 2 remotes so i owed $170 she then tells me "it was a mistake" i tell her ya a mistake of THERES NOT MINE! she wouldn't not listen to reason and got VERY rude with me saying that it is a legit charge and $220 IS what i owed i asked to speak to a supervisor who tells me that she can't do anything about it (she's a supervisor why CAN'T she do something about it?) anyway i paid the $170 sent a letter to disputes and they kept telling me they have not received it yet 2 months later so i told them well i paid what i owed and i'm not payin a dime more then i get one last call from the collectors agency and fought up and down with this guy and told him i paid what i owed and i was NOT paying a dime more he asks me if i think it should be DirectTV's responsibility and i said yes cause it was there LIES that started this to begin with never got another call from them after that and i had it taken OFF my credit report so i now have excellent credit :) but the only thing i can tell you is this STAND your ground and DON'T take any bull off them if you let them they will walk ALL over you

now my aunt is a diabetic and didn't really like living by herself plus the house that we lived in at that time was extremely cold so for the winter i had moved in with my aunt i had 2 other receivers that i had used yrs ago with them but i had canceled cause they had never gotten the locals and Dish Network did so i asked that they install those and since i had the $5 a month fee in case anything tears up which i thought i was covered under lost items as well i asked the guys there several times are they covered for lost items they assure me they are so i get 2 remotes the next month i pay another $100 just to find out that they charged me $30 when my bill came out for the 2 remotes and charged me $10 for downgrading to the plus from the premium cause they hadn't charged me that when they were supposed to have (and they shouldn't have charged me that cause the guy said he'd do it so i could get my free month which i obviously never got)

when i call up and speak to a representative the guy tells me that lost items are NOT covered i tell him that the 2 guys i spoke with told me they were and he'd not refund the charges so i got fed up and cancelled that $5 a month plan since it wasn't what i was told it was and they charged me yet another $10 for downgrading after all was said and done at the end of that month i paid another $100 and by this time i was fed up and called to cancel completely the lady tells me there is a $200 cancellation fee and i was FINE with paying that $200 cancellation fee so i wouldn't have to deal with them anymore i pay the $96 that i owed before canceling and sent the stuff back including the 2 remotes and demanded they refund me for them about a week or so later i get a letter in the mail from a collections agency saying that i owe Direct tv $220 (was $250 BEFORE the $30 credit for the 2 remotes)
