My son wanted to play flag football to keep in shape and learn footwork for fall tackle.  He was given a 16 year-old boy as a coach.  They are not being taught anything.  They are being told to go run and catch the ball.  That doesn't teach them about positions, plays, footwork, catching, flag pulling, etc.  The website says "Spring and Fall seasons are 9-10 weeks long, with practices once a week and weekend games. We encourage all playing abilities and are focused on learning the game, teamwork and having FUN!  There is no learning here and when approached to complain, they say they are all about fun and nothing else.  Don't waste your time and money here.  There are other leagues that will actually teach your child rules, positions, technique, footwork, etc.  This league is all about getting together with friends.

I have the same issue...

AUTHOR: OMG - (United States of America)

POSTED: Friday, June 03, 2011

I am a parent of a child in this league.  I am having the same issue.  Here is a post from my son's teenage coach:

Parents,

practice this week is on friday. i belive it is at the normal place, i know
it is at the normal time. As for saturdays game, it is at 3 oclock at
chesterbrook. That is an action packed day for me, i have an SAT in the
morning, and prom that night. I will be at the game, but there is a
possiblity that i will be late, and early leaving.
On another note, i would like it if parents would come out to cheer on our
team, but there is a fine line that is not to be crossed. Please, please,
please if you have any complaints feel free to contact me. i will send
complaints on to shane. One last thing, i am expereinced in the game. I am
a ref as well, and played in the leauge for 5 years. i do know what i am
doing, please know i am trying my hardest, and i will figure this out, in
the mean time, let me do my job, and you parents do your job
, which is
cheering on your children. Go Steelers!

Brenden

He has no idea what he is doing and the league keeps defending him.  I spent my hard earned money for my son to play and it has been a complete waste of time.  The coach doesn't know what he is doing and has berated the children on numerous occasions, yelling and screaming, as well as name calling.

Here is another email from the coach:

Parents,

First of all I would like to sincerly apologize to my parents who have been
very faithful to me and belived in me all year. I would absolutly hate to
lose the parents as my support system. Please, please please do not confuse
my passion and drive to win with me putting down the kids. I never want to
put down the kids, and it was never, and never will be my intention to put
them down. I have grown fond of all your childern, and losing any of them
would be a loss to me and the team. Please do not let my slip in composure
during this evenings game dictate the way you think about me, or the way you
veiw me as a person.
On another note, please dont forget there are no games
this weekend, and we won't have practice till next monday. Game balls to
Devon Cantor, and my "dynamic duo" Alex Rosa, and Ethan Fuller.

I am so unhappy with this league that I will not be signing my son up to play in it next year and would recommend not signing yours up either.  There are many other leagues that are far better out there in the Loudoun County area.

DMB Sports - Cascades Flag Football

I coach in this league, and my assistants and I attempt to teach the kids on our team as much as we can in our 90 minutes per week of practice time.  Our kids learn offensive plays, zone defense formations, the rules of the game, how not to commit penalties, sportsmanship, and anything else we can squeeze in in such a short amount of time.  During games, coaches are on the field with the players before each play, and they provide coaching points as required.

The coaches in this league are volunteers, not professionals, and as such can have differing levels of experience.  Each Football season (Spring and Fall), the league puts out a call for volunteer coaches.  Often, there are not enough volunteers.

If you have a child in this league, and if you are astute enough to recognize the value of teaching the finer points of football technique, then you would probably make an excellent volunteer coach or assistant coach.  I hope to see you on the field next Fall.
