Today on August 19,2010 around 8:43am, I received a call from a 206 area code on my phone. Well considering I was still asleep because I work late, I didn't answer and sent it to voicemail. Later when I woke up I looked at my phone and sen that I had a voice mail from this strange number.

When I listened to it, there was a lot of background noise and then a man with a strong accent started to speak. He stated that he represented the U.S Dept. of Investigations and that I needed to call him back to handle this matter. He also stated that if I failed to contact him then I needed to seek legal representation and that only God could help me out of this legal matter.

Well, being the way I am, I called back and started asking questions. When I called back, I got and answer from a guy with a similar accent. He began to ask questions like verifying my d.o.b. and address and even my full social security number. That is a little diturbing to me.

With the info that I gathered, I called the "company" and spoke to an "american" sounding man who informed me that my information was not in their database. He also said that these people have been doing this for a while and they get several calls a month regarding similar matters.

To me these people need to be stopped and I am not sure how I feel with them having all my information. Hopefully all of us "victims" can pull together and take them down.

ID theft.

"I am not sure how I feel with them having all my information."

You should feel worried that scammers have all of your personal info.

It has become clear from numerous reports of this scam, that the scammers have come into posession of a large amount of personal information, including names, addresses, phone numbers, references, bank acct. numbers and social security numbers. Most of those reporting the scam indicate that at some time in the past, they filled out an online loan application. My guess is that these scammers have obtained (most likely illegally) a large database of this personal info.

While these particular scammers are only using the info to try to make themselves appear to be a legitimate collector, that does not mean they couldn't sell the info to some other criminal when they are done with it. The amount of information they are revealing on these phone calls is enough to allow anyone to steal your identity.

If you've received one of these scam calls, you should consider your identity to be at risk. I highly recommend going to the FTC's identity theft website and taking the precautions outlined there :
