I recently received a letter from a collection agency stating that I owe about $80 for medical services. I sent a dispute letter to the agency because I never received a bill prior to placement. Plus, the BBB gave the collection agency an F rating and is suggesting that customers ask for detailed bills before paying this agency any money. Moreover, because they are a 3rd party collector, and they most likely report to credit agencies, I thought I would be safe and dispute the charge with all three credit bureaus: Equifax, Transunion, and Experian.

The process was fairly easy with Transunion and Experian. But when I attempted to see if the account was reporting on my Equifax report, the company required a confirmation code. To have a confirmation code, I would already need to be in possession of my credit bureau or would need to pay for a copy. This policy seems ludricous, because the process should be as simple as it is with the other two credit reporting agencies. Equifax should really allow a customer to dispute an item without a confirmation number, especially if the customer is fairly certain that he or she has an item to dispute on their credit report. So I took some time and reported Equifax to the BBB, the Attorney General, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. In my experience, the latter is the most effective source to complain to, but it is always good for the other offices to have complaints on file.

I'd suggest that you file reports as well if you are experiencing a similar problem with Equifax.
