Ahh a credit union..

That explains it. Often they actually have some concern over their customers finaces and not just care about fees alone. If this had been one of the major banks (BofA, US Bank, Wells, Chase etc) chances are they would have allowed the charge to go through and then told you there is nothing they can do when you question it and filing a dispute would have been the only recourse.

You were quite fortunate.  Ever since I almost got nailed by one of these credit report services I now use extreme caution whenever anything says "free", or "one time charge". Often if you read the finer print, you find out you are automatically enrolled and renewed into programs you had no intent or desire of applying for, yet you get enrolled and charged anyhow because you missed it. And why do people miss this? Because these companies with malice want people to, so they make the info less obvious.

Hopefully this report will help others but these companies and others will continue to do this giving us plenty of material to report and respond to on this and other complaint sites.

While Experian may be considered a "legitimate" company or agency, we need as wise consumers consider what the definition of "legitimate" is these days. To me it appears to mean ripping people off but somehow remain within the boundaries of the law, or skate the line. One would think it has do with ethics or customer service and this is what they hope potential victims believe. Not all agencies and companies operate this way, but all too many do.

Some take offense when the term "victim" is used on reports regarding these types of issues. But if you look up the definition of the word victim, it seems apparent it applies...ie:

  • an unfortunate person who suffers from some adverse circumstance
  • a person who is tricked or swindled
In your case the credit union prevented a swindle. For many others they are not so fortunate.

You can search this site for "Experian CIC" and will come up with around 745 reports. If you internet search "experian CIC complaints" it will yield around 247,000 results.

Many will be relating to this report, unauthorized charges. Some did have to file a dispute to get the charges reversed according to reports.

You have to be very careful with these companies..

They like to use the term "free" this and "free" that, but if you are not on guard they will charge for "monitoring" and other useless nonsense.

Once a year you can get a free credit report from the bureaus but you still have to be careful. Now it is going to say somewhere that you are automatically going to be charged but they don't make it as obvious as all the "free" they promote.

I have used these companies before but you have to make sure to cancel the offer right away or you will be automatically charged. There are thousands of reports and complaints about this, you are not the only one deceived into this scheme.

You are fortunate your bank had your back on this one, you should let us know what bank you use, most would have done nothing and this would have ended up in a dispute and it could have taken 30 days or longer to have the charges reversed, or could have possibly got nothing back.

I am curious..

Experian is a legitmate company and they do provide a service.  Does everyone need this "service"..No.  For most people checking your report once a year is enough and the reason that the government mandated that you are allowed one free report every year.

But even though not everyone needs this service, I find it very interesting as to why your bank would call you about a charge.  Especially if you didn't contact them first about the invalid charge.  I am sure it would be redacted if you tried to post the banks name, but it would be interesting to know who.

If there is a "scam".  It is that it just amazes me how much information people are willing to give up without actually reading what they are signing up for.
