I recently went to Garden City Chrysler to purchase a used 2006 vehicle that had been advertised on their website for $14,700. After seeing and driving the car, I went into the used car department to negotiate a sales price. I asked the salesman to see what he could do with the numbers. I was paying cash. He came back with a price of $16,990 plus taxes and fees. The fees as he showed me totaled about $1200. They included a vehicle prep fee, a delivery fee, a documentation fee, an inspection fee and one other fee. These were in addition to taxes and the registration fee.

I told him that I would not be paying these fees since they were not legit fees. I informed him that they were false fees made up to add propfit for the dealership. The salesman brought over a manager and both agreed that I was correct that the fees were there to boost profit.

I then asked what they could do on the price of the car and they stated the lowest they could go was $16,900. When I informed them that the car was advertised at $14,700. I was told that they could not waive the fees and sell the car at $14,700. They refused to sell me the car at the advertised price. Even when I told them that I would register the vehicle myself (to save them the documentation fee) and that they could deliver it to me without washing and waxing it (to save the $500 prep fee) they still refused to sell the car to me.

These people are ripoffs. The fees that they charge are nonsense! Read the fine print on the purchase order where they admit that some or all of the fees may be applied as profit.

This dealership is owned by the same person that also owns Westbury Chrysler Jeep and Grand Prix Chrysler in Hicksville. Buyers beware.

Yes it's true!

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

The story is in fact a true story. There was no fine print in the ad as one would think. In fact, the dealership was in violation of the New York State General Business Law because it had no fine print related to the ad. I was once in the auto sales business and I am well aware of the advertising requirements and schemes that Garden City Jeep Chrysler plays. A complaint with documented evidence was provided to the State Attorney General's Office.

Claim: Dealer wanted 23%+ above advertised price? Who would believe that?

Really, John? Be honest... who do you think will ever believe your claim that a car dealer wanted to charge you 23%+ above their online advertised price? .....(snicker) Did you read the fine print on their site? ....(snicker)

OK, before I laugh and choke on my coffee...

Why don't you look for a NEW car? Used cars are often NOT the bargains people believe they are simply because the real value of a used vehicle, as a result of depreciation, is usually a lot less that the dealer's price. So you face a much greater drop in value with a used vehicle that you would with a wisely purchased new vehicle. And each used vehicle is a "one-of-a-kind".

New vehicle purchase
1. You determine what current NEW car/truck you want...and not a 'last year's leftover'.
2. You solicit bids from franchised dealers selling that car/truck. There are many online dealer-bid services. There are recognized approaches, such as mailing a letter or sending a FAX to each dealership's GM or fleet manager requesting a price bid. Some will decline to bid but many others will bid. The specific response rate is usually a function of a particular model's demand. But you MUST be specific about exactly what you want so everybody quotes on the "same" new car/truck.

2.1 My daughter got more than $6000 off window sticker price of a NEW '07 Subaru this way. Gas price crisis, you know.

3. When you get your prices you will be selecting a NEW vehicle which would NOT be delivered with potential ACCIDENT DAMAGE, deferred maintanence, operator abuse, etc.
