This past month I shorted my minimum payment in error to J C Penney's by $10.  I received a message by phone to either call G E Money Bank or log into the J C Penneys website.  I logged in, read my statement.  Found out for my $10 shortage I was charged $39.  The statement went on to say that my minimum payment was due by August 8, and that my bill was past due on another part of my account information.  So I programmed my Quicken for them to receive what was due on 8/8 and had it sent to arrive on July 30.

Well, GE Money called us every day sometimes 3/4 times a day, either leaving a message or just hanging up.  All this for $10.  We decided that they owed us the $39 and let them call and we didn't answer because we have caller ID.  They finally received our minimum payment on July 30.  Two weeks of calls stopped then.  We figure they spent far more than $39 calling us and leaving messages.

To make it even more interesting is we received a colorful post card during that time telling us our credit limit was being INCREASED by $500!  Pretty scarey.

I like to shop the J C Penney catalog and am very disappointed that they have such stupid people for their financiers.  They should be more careful or JCP will be out of business soon the way they are going.

Nothing you described here would be any different than any other credit card.

You did NOT pay the minimum REQUIRED and were assessed a late fee.  It does not matter if you didn't pay it at all, shorted it by $0.01, $10, or $1,000 you will be assessed the same late fee.  Until you pay the FULL minimum required you are late on your previous months payments.  As such they will call you with "reminders" that you are late.

Yes your next payment was not DUE until the 8th, and if you didn't pay it by that date they would charge you another late fee.  But that still does not change the fact that you did not pay the required amount the previous month, so as far as they are concerned you are still LATE.  Oh and the "it must have cost them more than the $39 to call"..sorry but NO.  With automated dialing, and VoIP based phone systems they probably spent only about $1-$2 on all of the calls.

As for the Credit Limit increase.  Just as the collections are pretty much computer based, so are these increases.  It was very likey that your "increase" was put through before you were late.  So it may be likely that they will remove the increase(and may even cut it down more) once this late pay goes through the system, but it may be just as likely that they don't do anything.
