Good evening,

I am a very frustrated customer of Geico (11 years with them), and when my fiance and I moved 2 months ago, we did a post office mail forwarding (change of address) and with 6 other companies as well as our drivers licences with DMV. We never received anything about a policy cancellation nor have we ever been late on paying our bill each month $180 each month.

I contacted the customer support line and was told by both a representative and a Manager that it is my fault for not calling them. My fiance sent in May and June a slip that comes with each payment each month a change of address form. This was completed for 6 companies including Geico. We never received a geico cancellation notice in the mail, but the only letter we did receive states that our policy was cancelled on Aug. 24th and we owe $11.30 more even though the account is closed - we received this letter 2 weeks later on Sept 12th. On the envelope it says in yellow sticker from our post office "NOTIFIED SENDER OF CHANGE OF ADDRESS". I got this back from every other client I changed the address with.

I was told from a (GEICO employee - friend) that GEICO will not forward ANY mail to new addresses until the change of address is made and clarified. Go figure!! I don't understand why I have to pay for the error from Geico when they never looked at the change of address forms we sent. I was told that geico shreds the forms and there is no proof. I now had to pay $360 to Geico
and $16 per day to DMV for 20 days for 2 cars. Why is this? This is ridiculous.

Please help us. I am contacting news stations tomorrow to see if they can bring up this sort thing on one of their programs so the public can see what sort of garbage is running these companies. I found out from a Geico employee (friend) that they have a huge client complaint list for change of address errors (along with plenty other complaints). The people deserve to know what they are doing.

Please Help!! I spoke with an A. George and his Manager B. Todd who was instructing him on what to say. I have proof of all my change of addresses. They confirmed with me on the phone that my address was changed with DMV and post office - isnt that enough? This cost me $720 and I followed instructions

Geicos address is:

GEICO
750 Woodbury Road
Woodbury, NY 11797

Hi Joe,
You are correct I should have pre-paid, but my only point is GEICO should get a system that allows them to contact a customer when an unusual situation pops up in their history. My company has it and it helps with taking my reps off the firing line. If I would have gotten you on the line initially, maybe this issue could have been resolved faster. Anyway, I appreciate your comments and GEICO has redeemed itself as far as I am concerned. I have already signed up for online payment so this issue will never come up again. Maybe now I can spend the next 11 or more years with GEICO as I am purchasing another vehicle in 2 weeks.

Thanks for your time Joe. Have an excellent year!!

GO GEICO!!!

gordon call next time

I am an employee of Geico. Geico is a great company and we pride ourselves on our standing financially and ethically. A simple phone call to Geico would have gotten your address changed, and would probably have avoided a cancellation notice being sent to you. I understand that you sent it in the mail and yes it seems your address was updated by the post office. However, sometimes the post office makes mistakes as well, and the address could be wrong. We have no idea if your new address is correct or not, which is again why you would want to call Geico to confirm the information as correct. Also, even if you do not receive a bill, if you have a payment due, you are required to pay it. It would be the same thing as if you have a car loan. Just because you don't get a bill, doesnt mean you don't have to make the payment. One option you might want to consider in the future is having your payments automatically withdrawn every time. This will save you time and you won't have to worry about a bill being late or unpaid, and it will certainly avoid the cancellation notices to you. We pride ourselves on outstanding customer service and the ability to resolve problems. Our customer service line is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and we also have an award winning website at www.geico.com. We certainly don't want you to feel as if Geico did this on purpose, and after being with us 11 years, you should feel safe in the fact that Geico will take care of you for many years to come. I wish you well in the future and anytime you need to make a change to your policy, please call us, and we will be happy to update your information in a timely manner.

I don't work for Geico

However, you need to accept some personal responsibility. Ok..so you don't do online payments. But still, however you keep track of your bills you had to know you hadn't PAID your car insurance in TWO months. Are you saying that you think you didn't have to pay because you hadn't received a statement? Consider yourself lucky that you've only have fees to cover! If you had been involved in an "at fault" accident things would have been MUCH worse and that would have been YOUR fault not Geico's.

I did read your full report. The $360 you were billed was for 2 months. You stated you pay $180 per month and as admitted you didn't pay July or August "on time" because of not receiving a statement at your new address. The $11.30 was probably a "pro-rated" amount after termination or a cancellation fee. Also allowed for them to do. The DMV thing I don't get. In my state the court or DMV is only notified if you are an "at risk" driver that is required by law to have an Sr-22.

Even when you pay over the phone there is proof. Over the phone would either be credit card(proof..your cc statement) or direct debit from your checking(proof you can easily get from your bank if you don't have your statement).

Either you know you didn't make the payments when you should of or your fiancee is claiming she made them and can't back up those payments and you believe her and made them again(360+360=720).

I am someone who believes in follow up phone calls. Ny phone number NEVER changed. 11 years with a company, I expect some accountability on the company side to assist their clients. They should have a BETTER system in place or at least a system, that notifies customers by phone calls when they receive a notice back at their office for a change of address. If you read the whole article, you can clearly see that GEICO is NEVER wrong. They are so confident in their practices that they shred documents that should be placed in customer files. I know that because I work in customer service and I would not make a customer go nuts over something in my control.

Needless to say - I paid for July August over the phone. They should contact DMV and assist me in getting rid of the $360 charge. I don't do online payments - I work in Technology and watch the news, there is too much fraud. I should have sent a payment in early but I guess I expected more from a company as big as GEICO. A huge learning experience. What ever happened to courtesy to the client. We still do it in my business.

I hope this helps out!! Funny thing, I got phone call back from 3 companies verifying our new address. Now that is polite and courteous. Kudos to PC Richards and Nissan.

Can you tell us a bit more?

They usually only cancel your policy for non payment. Whether or not you were receiving their statements you would have known you had a payment due. How did you pay? Do you still have proof of those payments? Why didn't you pay online? Or change your info online as well as in writing.

It sounds like you made the may and June payments. Then you moved and didn't make the July payment because you didn't receive a "bill". You could have made a payment without a statement via the USPS or online. I know all my due dates and my bills get paid early or on time regardless of whether I've received my statement. I have a mailman who had been misdelivering mail in our neighborhood and many people don't care to "walk it over" to their neighbors so it never gets where it should. I recently didn't receive my car insurance statement but I still made the payment(before the due date) and notified them.

Most states will cancel you after 30 days without a payment but will not "terminate" your policy until 45-60 days. So it sounds like you didn't make your Aug. payment either. What did you expect to happen?
