I got a call today from "Susan" at Giove Law Firm telling me that I owe on a debt that was charged off in 2000. Of course, I was totally taken aback, not just by the fact that they were calling me about an alleged debt that has passed its statute of limitations, but because they were able to get my information.
You see, I just moved to a different state not even a month ago. I have been living with my sister until I find a place close to my work. The scary part of all of this is that they were able to get my sister's information, and that of her husband and her husband's mother. My sister is a police officer that works with some very dangerous criminals in one of the worst areas of the country. It is important that her information is kept private. I haven't forwarded my mail to this location, I have no matters of public record, I have not changed any of my financial information to the new state, and my sister and I do not even share the same last name. How in the h**l did they get this information?
I asked them how they got this information and they were very evasive. I told them that it was important to me that I knew how they got it, but she said they just did "an investigation." That is impossible.
Of course, I am not going to be dealing with these crooks, especially after the threatening language they used when I asked them to send me something in writing. Even though I knew they were crooks, I tried to be polite, but they attempted to intimidate me into paying them. I'm going to pay for something that I dispute after speaking to someone on the phone for 5 minutes? Nothing in writing? Forget it.

They get info from credit agencies like experian, transunion, equifax or change of address databases and other sources. Somewhere out there is a database they tapped into that shows your relation to your sister, her relation to her husband and her husband to his mother. because they are "lawyers" these criminals can gain access to this sensitive information

You need to write to these clowns, certified mail, return receipt requested, and demand validation of the debt. Include a cease & desist -- tell them they are only to contact you in writing. And get a recorder for your telephone. If they call again, advise them you are recording the call. Do not sign the letter you send them. Print your signature or type it. And please check your credit reports. Good luck.
