I shopped for health insurance when I made the decision to quit my job and finish school by attending University of Maryland on a full-time basis to acquire my legal studies degree next year. I applied for short term benefits as I was informed that it would take some time for the underwriters to gather appropriate information in order to make an assessment. I received a call from a broker employed by Golden Rule who told me that I should consider applying for the long term insurance with them because they can run the information just as quickly as they do the short term and its nearly the same process. I told her that I already paid the deposit which was about 100.00 to get the short term policy and I would get the money back for that and then apply for the long term policy but she told me that I could get that back within 5-7 days and that I should apply for the long term policy before the 1st of February or the rates would go up. I explained to her that I had already submitted some applications for that with some companies and she asked me if I did with Golden Rule and I told her no because I didn't feel as though the costs were as efficient for my needs as other companies were. She talked to me about that ans sent me a policy that I felt was good and I agreed that I liked all of the elements of it. She suggested that I arrange to cancel the short term policy and apply for the long term policy. So I did. Now I have 263.00 of uncertain funds into Golden Rule. Soon after I cancel my short term policy with Golden Rule I receive a packet in the mail stating that I am approved for that but that it only covers nothing meaning they would not cover anything that was pre-existing. I began to wonder if that included this pain in my butt that started before they actually approved me. But it was canceled anyway and I was awaiting my refund and the answer about the long-term. It has been several weeks now and no refund although they believe that they have sent it out, it has not graced my mailbox. And would you believe it, they have denied my long term policy. So now they have over 250.00 of my funds that they have wasted in actuaries fees but have promised back to me. I have called Golden Rule several times to request that they return these fees but have not had any success. So, I contacted the better business bureau. I filled out the complaint with their local better business bureau but was contacted by the BBB's representative letting me know that Golden Rule will not let them file a complaint until I send them an authorization for disclosure of personal information. I am really curious about the personal information they would like to release first but I am getting stonewalled by the BBB now. Geez!
