I wanted to be a truck driver. I went to school in Oregon, graduated 3rd in a class of 7. (I never was an A-student).

I was taught how to do things LEGALLY. I was taught that you are out there to make money and to keep that money in your pocket.

Due to personal reasons, I had to move to Arizona in order to become a driver. I went to work for DSW. I was out with a "trainer" for 6-weeks. This guy wasn't any more experienced than I was. At least he didn't act like it: 65mph in 35mph construction zones, constantly "doctoring" his log book, leaving me to find my way in unfamiliar places. Etc..

This guy was supposed to be teaching me how things were done. While I was driving he was in the bunk playing video games!!!. And, he is still training!!!

So, what I learned, I learned on my own. Until I came to Tucson, I had never pulled a 53' trailer. Oregon trains with 27 and 48' trailers. That extra 5 feet makes a big difference.

the biggest thing I learned?? Don't complain. These companies hate that. I was told that I wasn't going to change anything.

Being forced to sit in 103 degree weather for 18 hrs was "part of the job". I couldn't drive 23 miles to a yard, to get out of the heat!!! It was "Too FAR" the fleet manager said. I have alot more but my space is limited. Please notify me.

while some companies have control of the daily doings and operations dsw/hds actually is nothing more than an owner/operator for swift. yes leaving you in the 103 degree heat was way wrong but in 2002 fuel prices were only 1.49 or something like that,so idling was cheaper. as for their trainers well consider this you owed them im guessing around $4000.00 wouldnt you want your money ASAP.?? besides it also makes a TEAM truck which means freight can move faster in less time. and since america is in a hurry to not wait guess where that 2 day hot load is going with ?? yup you and the trainer!!! now im not defending DSW/hds' decision yes a trainer should have more than 6 months behind the wheel before teaching a new NO eperience driver, BUT thats EXACTLY what is wrong with the industry today. kindergardners teaching each other without supervision. the twist of this is i have 12 years in this country NO D.O.T. reportables and 6 years overseas independent. they will NOT let me train NO company will. sure some of the trucks are nasty heck even had to clean a few out if you saw some of the insides of these trucks you would understand why these companies hold on to OLD trucks as long as they can. afterall why spend money on good equipment thats only gonna get trashed by some irrate employee.?? you wouldn't drop $95000.00+ on a truck to have it trashed would you?? so to close this i work there too i dont like it either but hey its money im not in the street thats all that matters..
p.s. you shoulda called safety about the trainers speeding and log doctoring its your life too..
