I am repulsed by the nickle-and-diming used in the H&R Block TaxCut tax preparation software online. Why is it another $25 for the State preparation software -- which you need to get after buying the Federal version?? Why is it another $11 to efile -- after paying over for $50 for Federal and State preparation software shouldn't efiling be FREE??

Why would anyone want to get a mail in rebate for the State version of the software -- when you made the software purchase online?? Why do they attempt to catch people for a FREE credit report when there really is a $10 per month charge unless you cancel during the 30-day "free" period?? Credit reports from the 3 reporting agencies are now FREE for the asking. This is sleazy, and disgusting. After 3 years of using this Company I am going to find a better deal elsewhere. I really pray the tax code changes and puts an end to this type of sleaziness.

Some restrictions apply.

Most of the sites referenced on the IRS web site have certain income restrictions for using their free e-file program.

One site that does not is www.taxact.com. You can fill in the return online or download their free edition software. If you fill out the return on line, the e-file is free. If you download the free edition of their software there is a charge for e-filing (I think 7.95 but I am not positive). I think that their state tax software is around 15.00 but again I am not positive. There may be other sites that provide the same service. You will just have to do some research to find them.

Changing the tax code has no bearing on how H&R Block does business. They provide a service. Consumers make the choice to use them or not.

site you can file for free no purchase & instant filing

I have used the following IRS site for the last 3 years for my personal taxes... it has complete instructions, is totally free, you can print out a copy for yor records (as well as save the file on your PC),you get instant submission & you can actually go online to check the status of your return after filing! I have had absolutely no problems with this site. There is also a site for our state (Alabama) which I have also used with the same positive results. I believe I found the state link at the same site.... but if you can't locate your state there, just do a search for "Income taxes your state"
The email address is I used for my taxes is:

http://www.irs.gov/individuals/index.html

I hope this helps....if not for this year, perhaps you can save the info and use it next year. Good luck & best wishes

W.R., Alabama
