I went with Hughes Net due to be in such a rural area and nothing else was available in early 2010. I paid $93 monthly for a very poor service with very litmited usuage. Dial up of the 80's was more dependable. I called to cancel service at my 2 year end of contract they offered me a $30 discount was still not able to find another internet service so I kept it from May 2013 to Sept 2013. I had been charged a few different times for tokens I did not authorize on my account. Called to cancel because I bought a Verison 4g router and didnt care if it worked better or not Hughes Net just plain had to go. They informed me I had to return the modem, wires and the piece that was on top of the sattelite on my roof. They sent me a box for the returns. Finally found someone to go up and take it down. Sent it back and they were still saying I owed $200 for that piece. I personally took it to Staples in their box with their addy label  to be shipped by UPS and have the receipt. They charged my Discover card $210.I had NEVER used reaccuring payments with them because I did not and still do not trust them,I have always used 1 time payment they provice so they would NOT have access to any of my debit or cc accounts. I opened a dispute case with my cc. Early dial up was so much better then this service they provided. When you call to speak to someone it is very hard to understand them they are in India I believe. I had paid them over $2,000 in 2 years!

did not re sign a contract with them.

I did NOT renegotiate the contract with them. They offered me a reduced monthly fee without a contract for staying with them. I asked several times and was told I can end it at anytime without fee and I am not under contract again.

What you have been hit with is the ETF or early termination fee. If you review your ORIGINAL paperwork, you will see that in the event of either YOU cancelling service or just being dropped as a customer, you must pay a ETF. Since by your own words that you stayed with them AFTER your original 2 year contract was up, then you renegotiated the pricing, you ended up signing a NEW two year contract. Since you left BEFORE the end of the contract, they are going to make you pay the ETF.

Good Luck.
