I believe the Huron Law Group to be deceptive in their customer recruiting practices. They have been "grooming" my elderly father for several weeks now to sign on with their "debt settlement" program. My Dad is a 90-year-old Army veteran who has had some health issues recently; and he's concerned about some lingering credit card debt that he has. They have managed to impress him with the information they already had about his debt level during their initial calling phase. They are using women to make these calls. My Dad is susceptible to a "warm and friendly" female voice.

This Huron Law group has offered him a program, allegedly, that will intervene for him with his creditors. I looked up this "group" online and found a "store-front" website; present, but not very informative with specifics.

Additionally, I have listened to some of the voicemail messages they have left, and it sounds as if the woman/women are calling from some call center; there are lots of other voices in the background that can be heard seemingly making sales pitches.

I've talked with my Dad about this group and explained that most non-profit debt management folks don't require a large sum of money (around $500) to get started, and they don't require you to give them power-of-attorney, limited or otherwise, to conduct business on your behalf. This group/agency appears to be for-profit, and they have done this. Furthermore, even though they may debit the money from your checking/savings account, they do not guarantee that they will settle the debt with your creditors. It appears they expect the client to continue paying; all the while they're taking money from your account for fees.

I DETEST THERE TARGETING OF SENIORS/ELDERLY for their sales pitches. I find it highly suspicious that the callers use cell phones with numbers that show up as 'unknown' on the caller ID.

If you have a Senior parent who has been contacted by this group, PLEASE don't let them sign on with these folks.

It is a scam!

Had a similar issue with them recently! Be warned - this company will take all your money and make empty promises and distroy your credit in the mean time! I went from my credit being over 700 to low 400s and nothing came of it. Ended up having to back out of program and attempt to resolve issues with creditors myself.

Seriously

Wow, my mom is 73 years old, and recently turned to this company for help. Her credit was perfect, never once had a collection call or any problems with credit. She turned to this company due to being diagnosed with Cancer last year and the medical bills have been so overwhelming, she decided to do what she thought was a good idea and consolidate her debt into one bill.

In the few months that my mom has been with this company, her credit score has dropped from perfect to fair, there are companies dropping the small amount of credit she did have left, per seeing she had consolidated with this company in her TRW report. She receives numerous calls a day from her past creditors claiming they have not received payments, yet the company continues to remove the funds from her bank account monthly. Her trw is now showing she in over 7000 in past due payments behind.

This company did not help my mother, within a few months they manage to destroy what it took her entire life time to build. I am definitley getting my mother a lawyer and hope that all who are considering debt consolidation see this story and stay away from this company.

Law Firm That Assists Consumers With Debt

AUTHOR: HLG Law Firm - ()

POSTED: Thursday, May 01, 2014

HLG does not target the elderly in its marketing.  For individuals seeking a resolution to their debt issues, the intake team attempts to determine if the individual maintains a high balance of debt, if the individual is having difficulty managing the debt, if the debts qualify and if the individual is interested in hiring our firm to help manage the debt.  The complainant's father expressed interest in HLG's creditor workout program and so follow-up calls were placed by an intake specialist.  There was never a request that the calls cease from the complainant's father.  On the contrary, he requested further information and contact from our firm.

A company or firm that deals with your creditors will require you to sign a power of attorney granting that firm or company the ability to speak or negotiate on your behalf.  Creditors and/or debt collectors will usually not talk to a third party without a power of attorney on file.  The power of attorney HLG uses for clients like the complainant's father is a "limited" power of attorney that grants it no more authority than is necessary to speak to creditors, negotiate debts, and settle lawsuits on behalf of the client.

The complainant is correct in that Huron Law Group PLLC is a for profit law firm that charges a fee for its services.  The cost of our representation was never hidden from the complainant's father, and the fees are clearly detailed in the "fees" section of the retainer agreement and elsewhere.  Our firm attempts to be as transparent as possible about the risks and rewards of hiring a law firm to manage debt, including the costs of doing so.

The complainant has our contact information and may call any time if he has general questions.  However, we cannot discuss specific details with the complainant or on this forum since it would violate the attorney-client relationship we have established with his father.
