Shortly before posting this RipOffReport complaint, Rodney contacted us directly to discuss the iFriends accounts in question. Rodney verified that the information used to create the account, including credit card number, mailing address, and email address, was correct. The foregoing information was also independently verified using records supplied by Visa, as well as by internet IP-address registries.
We discussed with Rodney the two distinct forms of internet credit card fraud that we have encountered in some internet transactions that we have processed:
1. "True Person Fraud" (also known as "Friendly Fraud"), in which a cardholder falsely denies ordering products and services online, is one of the fastest-growing forms of credit card fraud, according to credit-card industry executives. In this form of fraud, cardholders are perpetrators and merchants are victims.
2. "Identity Theft," in which the criminal gains access to sensitive personal information, including credit-card details, and uses that information to defraud cardholders and merchants. In this form of fraud, individual thieves are the perpetrators, and cardholders, merchants, and the parent credit-card associations are collectively victims.
We informed Rodney that if he felt the use of his credit card and personal information was identity theft, he should promptly contact his local police department and file a complaint, and we would work in cooperation with them to vigorously investigate, prosecute, and bring the perpetrator to justice. Rodney indicated that he would take care of the charges, and that he was satisfied with the way we resolved the issue. We apologize if there was any confusion regarding the steps that would be taken. Unfortunately, we are unable to prosecute any person without further action from Rodney. If Rodney would like to proceed with an investigation, we strongly advise him to visit his local police department without delay to file a police report. At that point, we can provide all necessary resources to the police to resolve this matter, including all of the information provided to us by the user during the course of the usage of the account. Should there be any further questions or concerns, Rodney can contact our Customer Support Department (open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week) at (800) 243-9726.
