I am a current student at Kaplan University. I am months away from finishing my associates degree, when all of a sudden, a bill of $1779 pops up out of nowhere. They claim it was from my first term and they never received it, yet I was not notified until last month.

The first reason I was given as to why there was an outstanding balance was because my citizenship was in question, which was ridiculous. Then a second reason was given, stating that the school never got approval for any of my loans for that term. I started to smell a rat.

I got proof from Direct Loans that the funds were indeed dispersed to Kaplan University at that time and I faxed this to them. I have yet to hear their verdict, but in the meantime, I have Student Services literally calling me every 20 minutes to pay the entire amount immediately. I even got an email stating my classes would be blocked ASAP if no money was received. That is considered harassment the last time I checked.

I read hundreds of complaints on complaintboard.com about Kaplan, and I wish I did that before I enrolled. My husband and I are prepared to take this to court if necessary. I was at first worried about doing that because I am so close to my degree, but from the accounts I read, I would never get it anyway, either because the transcripts will be held by the school until their account is up to date, or the credits are worthless in the first place because most schools will not accept them.

It is time to bring this school down and bring justice to me and the hundreds of other victims of this leech like school.

Hello,

Your story.... Is MY story....

What have been your next steps? Who have you contacted? Is there a class-act lawsuit?

Any information that you have, and can give me would be much appreciated!

Thanks Trish.

Resolution

AUTHOR: Mel - (USA)

I am happy to report that my Financial Aid situation at Kaplan University has been resolved. The head of student Services gave me a call yesterday afternoon and officially written off my outstanding balance. The reasoning behind this whole situation did turn out to be a technical glitch; my citizenship status got flipped from US to Non US when the site was going through maintenance. The funds for the term in question automatically got rejected because of this, and never got manually changed back. I am glad the stress of this is over; however, this still left quite a scar on me emotionally, so I decided to just finish my associates at Kaplan and seek my bachelors elsewhere.

My situation ended in a good way, and for that I was lucky in a lot of ways. For starters, I had free legal representation at the ready if things got ugly because my husband's uncle and cousin are lawyers. They helped us look at the numbers at no cost to us.  My husband and I were also very persistent. We knew we were in the right, and we did not stop until Kaplan admitted it, which meant calling them as much as Student Services was calling me. Finally I got the right paperwork to prove my side of the story, such as copies of my Direct Loans account, copies of my student account (to compare against each other), and tax forms from the school. Even though the reason had nothing to do with the numbers ultimately, it helped to have them.

For other people who are fighting with their financial aid at this school or have yet to run into a problem (trust me, you may be blindsided like I was), here is my advice to you: Save EVERYTHING, and document it on your laptop/desktop or physical folder. Be vigilant. The Financial Aid department at Kaplan do drag their feet on most things, from my experience, so calling them constantly and inquiring about the status of your situation puts a break in the case much quicker. Seek out the advice of a lawyer, and try to get free consultation. It seems the mere mention of involving an attorney shoots your problem to high priority. If students at this university and other online universities do these three things, results will happen, and hopefully in the student's favor, especially if the student isn't at fault.

I do not advice for people to automatically get a lawyer as soon as a problem appears. I originally left it in the hands of the school to solve this problem on their own since it sounded like whatever happened was on their end. Everything started to s****.>
