I took my wife's 1999 Camry to the Les Schwab store in Tumwater, WA as it was the closest one to her work so I could get it back to her promptly. When I call and got the appointment. They were adament that the car would need 4 wheel alignment. In all the years I've had it alignet, the real alignment places I've taken it to never made any issuse about the 4 wheel alignment. They never even charged extra to do it and the car always drove like new then the got done with it. I knew from the was the guys at Les Schwab were acting they were going to demand the extra money for the 4 wheel alignment whether it needed it or not. I could tell by how many times the repeated it. Sure enought the guy is gone with it an hour and comes back and says 4 wheel alignment. Then he's gone another hour. Comes back and says he drove it and the car is still pulling to the right. He says it needs another 140.00 worth of work in the form or two shimmed bolts. $80 dollars to install. The other $60 for two bolts with shims. The whole strut, springs, washers and bolts don't cost much more than $60 in Oklahoma. I replaced them several times. Fortunatly for me they didn't have these golden bolts in stock so I was allowed to leave without them. The car was way worse and now the steering wheel was out of alignment which really pissed my wife off. IF they got 3 of the wheels so perfectly into spec and the one was only out a fraction like he told me at first, this car should be driving way smoother. Now it's almost undrivable. I'm going after them today with information I've gathered from this website. I will post my results. Also the whole time I was in the waiting area, they were really pushing the tire siping on people. I read where lots of people had premature tire breakdown with siping and Consumer Reports found no significant improvment with tire siping. To thear them push it, the manufactures want them to do it, and don't do it themselves because it takes too much time and money out of their tire manufacturing process. At least that was part of the Les Schwab Spiel. I saw too many people coming in and paying Les Schwab what ever they asked without question, eventhough most of them looked shocked when they were told what thier bill came to.

I'm a Master Mechanic I am very familiar with 2 and 4 wheel alignment

Before you do ANY further work, remove both front tires and switch them left and right (Put the left front on the right, put the right front on the left) then drive the car,

IGNORE ALL DIRE WARNINGS THAT RADIALS MUST NOT BE SWITCHED SIDE TO SIDE. That was true, but tires are constructed much better today than earlier (Pre '70) tires.

Drive the car and pay attention to the pull

If it's gone, leave the tires where they are, your alignment is not the problem, just a slightly defective tire, no urgent need to replace it if it has good tread left, just drive it until it either wears out or it's time to get new tires.

If it pulls the other way, you have a bad tire.that needs to be removed from the front.

move it to the rear (if the rears are good) or replace it, Drive he car again
All OK forget it

Pulling again? move the other front tire to the rear, by now it should be running straight

Please notice cars are correctly aligned with a slight left hand pull to counter the tilt built into all roads for water run-off,

If the pull changes when the tires are moved, plan on buying new (Better) tires.

If the pull does NOT change, then the alignment is at fault

Only do the expensive caster/camber shims as a last resort.

New information gets even worse

Took it back to a different Les Schwab because a had a hunch the one in Tumwater would just mess it up even more, and demand I have the 140.00 adjustable bolts added. The other Les Schwabb looked at the information from tumwater and said this car has had a wreck because the numbers in the beginning and at the end of the alignment show the car was way out of specs for that car and it has been wrecked in the front. I said NO! it has never been wrecked and the non-les schwab alignment place in OK where I used to live could always align it perfectly. They said well it says here the bolts should be replaced with adjuster bolts. I said and yes that's a rip off I bought one at NAPA and it was only 19.99 not 140.00. I said I just want you to have your guy look at the alignment to see if they made a mistake at Tumwater. He agrees. Hour later the guy comes back with the car and tells me the Tumwater LS's alignment machine was out of calibration, so they took my rear out of alignment and charged me. They said it rear was out of alignment and it wasn't, but since their machine was not calibrated, they took my car out of alignment in the rear and made it seem like the front was damaged. This guy got it back in alignment according to their machine. I drove it through town which has warpy roads so I couldn't really tell if it was better or not, but it didn't pull to the right anymore. When my wife drove it home, she said it is now pulling to the left. We drove it 800 miles over the weekend to Canada. The pulling to the left drove us both crazy. All my life I've had trucks and cars that pulled a little to the right and have always been able to correct for a pull to the right, but to have a car pull to the left is scary as hell, everytime a big truck or another fast moving car passes you and breaks the wind flow infront of your car it would really jump left and make you think you're going to side swipe the car passing you. Needless to say it is on its way back to Les Schwab of Olympia on Capitol Mall Blvd this morning. I will update later this evening. My wife wants me to pay someone else to align it, but I firmly believe in making someone you payed to fix something, fix it and fix it right, or I will keep taking it back. I forced Nissan to replace the rear seats in my brand new 1991 nissan ex-cab truck 15 times before they finally got it to stop rattling when you hit a bump. Traded it for another 1991 4x4 ex-cab nissan during the same year and had 5 rear ends replaced in it because they would roar going down the road. I won't quit.
